Overall, I think social media has brought about more benefits than harm but the harm definitely still needs to be watched out for and we need to try to reduce the negative effects of social media
I think it's important to teach children about digital privacy because what they post as a young tween will never go away, even if they delete it! Stuff can follow them for the rest of their life
I really hope that internet security increases in the future because it's crazy how often things can get hacked and people's information can get leaked! Especially important information like bank account info
This class reminded me of when I found out that the Like button was invented as a positive thing to show others that you liked their post but now it's turned into something harmful cuz people need a certain number of likes for validation... crazy how things can change
I find it scary how corporations care more about profitability than the well-being of people... they make social media addictive so we keep coming back to their apps and spending more time on them even though they for sure know how detrimental it is to mental health!
Has anyone else ever had a class incorporate Twitter into their coursework?? This is the first time I've ever seen Twitter used in an academic setting!
I think TikTok is the most addictive social media right now because the short-form content makes it so easy to get sucked in for hours because each video feels so short. It doesn't feel like the same commitment as watching a 2 hour movie
@sandra_educ307 Wow, I never even really considered how stories disappearing within 24h make you check apps way more frequently. I had only ever thought of them as a more casual way to share things so that it's not on your feed forever but people still briefly see it
@Manarolis307 I don't think so. I think what's put out there is out there forever on some server somewhere. People can also screenshot things and I'm sure social media servers have some encrypted data of anything ever posted and backup servers
Does anyone else have app timers on their phone to lock apps after a certain amount of usage?
I try using them sometimes but I also crack and disable them sometimes... it can be helpful to snap me out of mindless scrolling though
I think facial filters are an especially freaky part of social media now. Nobody looks real and it'll teach young children to hate how they look naturally, as if their face needs to be thinner like the filter shapes it to be
@jceduc307 I think whether you put it online or not, your movement would be put online by someone else if it started gaining traction. I feel like it wouldn't be possible to have a completely offline movement because it would be discussed online and awareness would be spread
I find it interesting how so many people are aware of their social media addictions and literally WANT to be on their phone less, yet it's often still incredibly difficult to reduce usage... just goes to show how addicting it really is
Has anyone else seen the TV series "Upload"? The course reminded me of it because the show is about people living in a digital afterlife once they've died. It's a really interesting concept!
I think TikTok has been one of the most successful social media platforms to date! Its algorithm and engagement really feel unmatched by other platforms at the moment
