Continuing its voyage into uncharted waters, the latest preliminary Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly is now at a record 3.08°C above the 1991-2020 baseline.

Models expect the Nino 3.4 anomaly to continue rising into at least mid-November. Then there will be dragons.

Three main possibilities from here: 1) A decline brought about by continued decarbonization, energy efficiency improvements and energy demand downshifting due to switching away from fossil fuels; 2) An increase caused by rapid growth in energy demand and slow decarbonization; or 3) A continued plateau thanks to the key forces above (system decarbonization and energy demand growth) largely cancelling each other out.
