@danielmgmoylan The triple lock essentially guarantees that, over time, pensions will rise faster than earnings. That means the amount we spend on pensions will go up faster than the tax base that pays for it.
I don't know what a fair alternative is but it's not sustainable long term.
@pavandavuluri Can we have a "Never, ever, ever, ever, until the heat death of the Universe, ask me if I want to use One Drive or sign up to Office 365 ever again." option?
@DavidMcNab17@IngEmpireWatch@ZackPolanski We run a £200b trade deficit in goods, import over 40% of our food and energy, have very few natural resources and our manufacturing got outsourced east years ago. The UK gov can't run out of £ but we absolutely can run out of people willing to swap them for $, € and stuff.
@LBC@lewis_goodall As the parent of a autistic child this idea absolutely terrifies me. Just thought of them being homeless and without money when we spent years saving and sacrificing to ensure that wouldn't be the case makes me lose sleep. Sure, take a cut to provide for others but 100% is wrong.
@Microsoft For the love of god how do I make Windows stop asking me if I want to use One Drive, change my browser settings or subscribe to M365 every week? I just want an easy and permanent way to switch that shit off.
@terrychristian The only 'subsidies' Tesla get now are from the sale of zero emissions credits, but this money comes from selling credits to other manufacturers so they can avoid big government fines when they sell too many polluting vehicles, not from the UK government.
@implausibleblog@DaleVince The question we need to ask is what exactly does the UK offer rich people, compared to other countries, that would make them want to stay here at a particular level of taxation?
If the answer is nothing then the tax won't actually raise any money.
@LibertyLockPod Since Trump started saying he's Putin's best mate, Europe is worried that he's going to do a 'deal' that starts by giving Putin everything he wants and then working backwards from that.
Everything you see is a reaction to the belief that Trump is not in fact good at deals.
@swe_zach@chamath Imagine scraping by as a janitor then suddenly being told by a billionaire you have to compete weekly in some kind of email Hunger Games judged by AI.
That sounds fucking awesome. Can't imagine why people wouldn't want that.
@BristOliver To me, none of it makes any sense without more nuclear power stations or some way of storing multiple TWh of renewable energy generated in times of excess. Neither of those things are going to happen by 2030.
I'm happy to be wrong but the timescale seems completely unachievable.
@tomgrunshaw@jburnmurdoch@DanNeidle Start of the 40% tax bracket at £50k plus you gradually pay back between 0 and 100% of any child benefit your family receives (via tax) as your taxable income increases between £50k and £60k. If you have 3 kids it makes your marginal tax rate look ridiculous.
@Madisonkanna I switched to using my left hand. Took a while for my brain to learn how to do that but now I'm mouse ambidextrous. The pain eventually went away and I switched back to right handed. No problems since.
@paddmadfad @kallmemeg They had to demolish the car park in Liverpool that burned back on NYE 2017. That was started by a Landrover too. Can't have been many EVs in that fire.

@jonburkeUK Autonomous vehicles will reduce road injuries. They will make it economical to serve less populated areas with buses. Autonomous taxis will allow people to not own a car 'just for longer trips'. They won't then drive 1 mile into town because the marginal cost is just a few pence.
@Culture_Crit It's not to my taste but it's not like they have destroyed some unique and rare specimen of British architecture. There will be hundreds, if not thousands, of other houses exactly like the left picture in the same neighborhood.
