@stevenstrogatz This cool physics demo by @MouldS seems like a great example for applied ODEs. Felt like it would fit right into one of your lectures. https://t.co/iScFup1CrE

Twitter laid me off today. If you know of any open positions for project managers or senior software engineers, let me know. I was in charge of the feature that made sure every time you tweeted about machine learning you were served an ad for an intro stats course.
Seeking PhD student to join my lab @Cornell to work on eco-behavioral dynamics in coral reefs. NSF-funded work will use state-of-the-art field imaging and computational models to understand what drives ecological interactions in coral reefs. DM or email if interested.
Ok, wait! Before everyone flees Twitter in a panic! I haven’t had a chance to announce that I’m moving my research program (& my fam!) to Ithaca in Jan. Joining the Dept on Natural Respurces & Env @Cornell
I’m recruiting 1-2 grad students @ a postdoc, so spread the word!
For anyone teaching statistics / data science, I cannot emphasize enough how empowering it is to be able to simulate data from a known process, and try analyzing it.
"Is this doing what we think it is? Let's find out!" -> definitely valuable to instill in students.
I'm looking for a new PhD student to study #Arctic marine mammals using passive acoustic data from Baffin Bay. Research questions focused on ecology/behaviour and effectiveness of protected areas. Fully funded position, to be based @UVicSEOS. Formal ad coming soon!
@dr_alphalyrae err, more efficiency.
And I think for folks with less formal background in coding/software, learning a new system can be a lot more intimidating.
@dr_alphalyrae At least with software, there's often a pretty big overhead for becoming familiar with it. Sure, I'd love an excuse to get more familiar with python or Julia, but if I can do the same task in R, I can probably tackle the coding in 20% of the time (or more?).
@seb_schreiber That is wild! Is this a system where the method is unusually likely to succeed, or should we generally expect the approximation to be this good?
@ZachWeiner The only that's really stuck for me is the idea of smart contracts, since that can get around the extra tax of paying a trusted organization to handle transfers of valuable goods (ie escrow). Not sure how well it actually works, though.
I am so excited to announce the next Trans Math Day will be happening December 3, 2022!!! TMD is an informal pop-up "un"-conference bringing together transgender and non-binary mathematicians. Registration link below, please share.

@LeafyEricScott @HABrazeau Yep! Although in my case it's more a matter of having an expert on the system/biology and an expert on the methods / broader context. Right now neither is local :(
In my case they're split across two institutions, and that part can be a bit of a headache. But overall it's great!
