Thank you @CanGeoEdu for a powerful day of learning! Excited to get started integrating all of the resources I learned about today into my course planning for the year ahead!
The Online Classroom by @CanGeoEdu has tons of great resources including their new Metis Culture Lesson Plans and the tiled world map with lesson plans that I had the privilege of creating last summer https://t.co/u1OP3l7SZt #GeographyHonoursSpecialist
Guardians of Eternity: Confronting Giant Mine's Toxic Legacy is a fantastic documentary that explores the lasting impacts that gold mining has in Canada's North, specifically for the Dene First Nation https://t.co/S8un848qSZ #GeographyHonoursSpecialist
Honour national and international days, weeks and months in your class to encourage class cooperation and increase global awareness #GeographyHonoursSpecialist
To support English Language Learners in geography & social science courses, I introduce key vocab in the first week & encourage students to add translations to this class resource for future reference. I also provide vocab review sheets with pictures #GeographyHonoursSpecialist
On Friday I shared @CanGeoEdu "Canada's Original Place Names" Google Earth Voyager Story with my #HSC4M class during our Google Meet time and we shared the meaning behind our own names. Check out all CanGeoEdu's stories!

A6: Build time into your classes to meet with students one-on-one, whether that be in a hallway, or in a breakout room. Have questions prepared to guide the conversation, but focus on listening #OttEdChat
A5: I used a New York Times’s What’s Going on in this Picture every week during synchronous learning in quad 1. Jamboard, Kahoot and Forms are also staples in my class. Planning to use EdPuzzle more this quad #OttEdChat
A4: I use Google Forms check-ins regularly to encourage students to reflect on themselves, our classroom community and their learning. Having a guest speaking last week reminded me of the importance of daily class convos. This is becoming easier as we adjust to Meets #OttEdChat
A3: Last year I ran station activities for both of my first days. Station 1: was to introduce yourselves in small groups using Flipgrid (so fun). Station 2: Come up with a items for a classroom agreement. Etc. Currently thinking about transform this using Jamboard #OttEdChat
Q3: What is your favourite activity to build community with your learners? Give a brief description or provide a link to the activity for others. #OttEdChat
A2: Engaging! It is so important that students feel pride for the work they are completing and that they are excited to login everyday. It is hard to tell this with no mics/cameras, but every time I get an “lol” in the chat I beam with pride #OttEdChat
My name is Emma MacLean. I am currently teaching Communications Technology at Brookfield High School, but next week I start teaching Social Science at Ridgemont High School. Today I am thinking about the transition to the new quadmaster and hoping it is smooth #OttEdChat
Day 7- I was nominated by @MsWillsonsClass & @MichaelKellerm8. For 1 week, I will post a picture a day from the life of an educator. Today, I am giving a shoutout to all the amazing staff and students at BHS for making me excited to go to work everyday
A1: Hi, my name is Emma MacLean and I teach Communications Technology, English and Social Sciences at Brookfield High School. Last week, I challenged myself to speak about the events that occurred in the USA with my Communications Technology class #OttEdChat
Q1: Welcome, everyone! Please share your name, what/where you teach, and any continued learning you've had related to Chapters 3 and 4 of Being the Change.
#OttEdChat
@MrsSmithOttawa I began the discussion with a series of pics I copied onto Jamboard. As I clicked through the slides, students added notes with how the pics made them feel, or how they thought people in the pics felt. A few students turned their Mics on to share at the end, big win in my class
@aanderson20 I have used @Flipgrid for this purpose as well! A great introductory stations activity. I had students introduce themselves in groups last year, with pretty funny results
A2: The simplest way we do this is ensuring we pronounce our student’s names correctly. I also strive to incorporate opportunities for students to use their first language in completing tasks. Lastly, ensuring students see diversity represented in course content #OttEdChat
Q2: On page 101, Sara says: “We can’t let ourselves fall into the trap of erasure. Don’t erase a person’s identity to make yourself more comfortable.” How can we celebrate and be inclusive of diversity, without making it “exotic?”
#OttEdChat
@MrsSmithOttawa Definitely! A “check in” often evolves into more than just a discussion of marks/class progress. It has been one of the hardest things for me to adapt to fully remote learning though. I invite students to drop ins, but they don’t usually attend unfortunately
A3: 1-on-1 conferencing with students & regular surveys allow me to learn about my students and their goals. Building these intentional interactions into my teaching has ensured that I serve all my students, not just in my class, but in their greater school experience #OttEdChat
Q3: To start Ch 5, Sara comments, “if we don’t see an individual or group in our universe of obligation or responsibility, we can easily look away.” As teachers, how can we make sure that we see and serve all students? How do we teach our students to do this as well?
#OttEdChat
A6: the best example of this I have was teaching World Cultures to a diverse class, I committed to a Learned Stance from day 1. At the start of a class about Arab culture, I told my students that I would prefer to learn from them. A student stood up and led the class #OttEdChat
Q6: Last one! Another way to be a more compassionate observer is to “Commit to a Learning Stance.” As an educator, how do you plan to commit to a learning stance moving forward in your work?
#OttEdChat
A5: I appreciate Sara’s suggestion of asking students what’s in their news- recognizing that I am not all-knowing, I am open-minded and always learning. One of my classroom agreements is “we will respect each other’s opinions, even if they are different from our own” #OttEdChat
Q5: In chapter 6, Sara discusses ways we can be more compassionate observers of the world. One is “Be an Authentic Listener” Does this vary from active listening? How do we demonstrate and teach our students to listen authentically?
