Yet they conveniently ignore the fact that they themselves carry Portuguese and Dutch surnames like Perera, Fernando, de Silva, Fonseka, Peiris, Rodrigo, De Saram, Jansz, Philipsz, Van Dort and many more names their ancestors adopted after converting and often intermarrying with the colonizers, many even using them to hide their recent South Indian origins.

Meanwhile, the so-called “collaborators” mostly kept their traditional Tamil names.

The irony is absolutely insane.

The legendary Thenisai Chellappa has passed away.

The man who raised an entire generation of Tamils in the homeland and in the diaspora, and who continues to do so to this day through his songs.

Hailing from Tamil Nadu, he showed an early interest in politics and music. He began performing songs on stage for Tamil political parties such as the Naam Tamilar Katchi and Dravidar Kazhagam. Later, he became involved in Tamil nationalist movements in Tamil Nadu, which ultimately led to him being noticed by VP, who requested that he record songs for the Tamil Eelam liberation struggle.

Thenisai Chellappa always stated that Tamil nationalist politics should be brought to the masses through music and art.

When the Tamil Resistance was banned in India and dozens of Eelam Tamil activists were arrested and imprisoned without trial, Thenisai Chellappa and his group fearlessly continued to create songs for Eelam Tamils and the resistance.

His music became a source of identity, courage, and emotional strength for Tamils across the world, keeping alive their connection to their homeland and national aspirations.

The Tamil nation salutes you on the day of your martyrdom.
