Public Safety MMC is conducting a walkabout in the Braamfontein Precinct to assess compromised areas requiring urgent safety interventions and law enforcement attention.
The oversight aims to identify critical challenges affecting the precinct and implement measures that will enhance public safety, reduce crime, and create a safer environment for students, residents, businesses, and visitors in Braamfontein.

The Public Safety Department is conducting visits to supermarkets in Braamfontein that have recently been targeted by criminal elements.
These areas are frequented by large numbers of students and have been identified as hotspots for opportunistic crime.
♦️Happening Now♦️
During visits to various outlets within the Braamfontein Precinct, the MMC observed a growing concern regarding limited regulatory oversight in some retail spaces. In particular, certain establishments operating as informal “5-in-1” shops were found to be selling a wide range of goods, including food items, snacks, thrift clothing, and books, often within a single unregulated setup.
The Public Safety Department has raised these concerns with relevant authorities, and Environmental Health Services will conduct a full oversight inspection to assess compliance with health, safety, and trading regulations.
♦️Happening Now♦️
Following the completion of inspections across identified hotspots in the Braamfontein Precinct, the Public Safety Department has noted with concern the absence and limited deployment of advanced CCTV infrastructure, including AI-enabled surveillance systems in emerging crime hotspots.
The Department will prioritise the expansion and installation of intelligent surveillance cameras in key areas to strengthen monitoring, improve rapid response capabilities, and enhance situational awareness for law enforcement.
