Cornell just produced a massive new report on higher education noting that companies have a “jarring” skepticism of higher ed thanks to a new generation of degree holders who lack key skills like handling uncertainty, compromising, and absorbing feedback.
Faculty also report that incoming students, despite four years of undergraduate education, are “underdeveloped” in these relational or interpersonal skills.
This is a serious crises in higher education and the report calls for a greater need for conflict-resolution training. We need to do a better job training our students to deal with these issues.
These are traditionally the skills students developed in higher education. I loved college because it challenged me, sparked debate, and required me to grapple with complexity. This should be an essential part of college--inside and outside the classroom.

People in romantic relationships report higher life satisfaction than singles.
But this life-satisfaction gap is larger in regions with higher relationship rates, according to a new study of 382,078 adults across 379 regions in Great Britain.
People in relationships may benefit from living in places where romantic relationships are more common.

What increases your social status?
Being a trusted group member is #1. This is what people value in their community.
Other factors include intelligence, university prestige, leadership, knowledge, creativity, honesty, public speaking, income, humor and kindness.
Stealing, stupidity, STDs, and uncleanliness are the biggest ways to reduce your social status.

The number of students admitted to top Ph.D. programs this fall dropped 15% from the previous year, after dropping 11% the previous year.
The nation’s top research universities are shrinking doctoral programs because of uncertain federal funding raising fears that the nation’s capacity to produce new science could be diminished.
“It’s a loss for the nation,” she said. “When you shrink the pipeline of basic discovery research, you choke off the flow of future solutions, innovations and cures — and you shrink the supply of future scientists.”
The current administration is creating complete chaos for grant funding that is damaging a generation of new scientific talent. https://t.co/3alhgqQ8Yf
Last year I wrote "Defunding the world’s leading scientific community is akin to performing a prefrontal lobotomy on the nation—you are effectively severing the connections between the most innovative ideas and its citizens." We are only starting to see the effects of that now. https://t.co/KRBcQaQIIJ
The biggest AI skill of 2026 isn't prompt engineering.
It's AI literacy.
Because the people getting ahead aren't the ones with better prompts.
They're the ones who understand what's happening under the hood.
Harvard just made 5 AI courses free:
→ Introduction to Generative AI

Most people won't take these.
That's exactly why they're valuable.

Facing adversity at work, team members often turn to one another to make sense of a problem that feels uncomfortable and uncontrollable. When negative thoughts and emotions dominate this sensemaking process, it can prevent a team from identifying constructive solutions
Now there is a new measure of collective rumination in teams to asses dysfunctional team processes. Teams who score high on this measure score lower on team performance and teamwork engagement.
Collective rumination involves recursive discussions of the problem, speculation about causes, speculation about consequences, sharing negative thoughts and feelings, and mutual reinforcement of problem talk.

The books you love are a window into your personality.
•Mystery & self-improvement attract conscientious people
•Sci-fi, psychology, philosophy draw open-minded people
•Memoir & horror appeal to neurotic people
Reading doesn't just shape our views. It reveals what we're like.
We should no longer trust data collected on MTurk

My guess is that other online data is going to drop in quality due to LLMs. This is going to be an existential crisis for the behavioral sciences.

Pressure to publish jumps. And researchers have no time to do science.
(New survey from Elsevier)
Survey of 3200 researchers:
1. Only 45% of scientists have sufficient time for actual research.
2. For 68%, the pressure to publish today is greater than 2-3 years ago.
3. 29% of researchers are considering relocating to another country (for better funding, work‐life balance, or greater research freedom).
4. 58% of researchers use AI tools in their work.
5. Reported benefits from AI: saving time (58%), helping with literature summaries (61%), literature reviews (51%), data analysis (38%), drafting proposals (41%), and drafting papers (38%).
