Egypt is about to sign a contract for the large-scale acquisition of South Korea's FA-50 light combat aircraft.

DefenseWeb reported that Khaled Abdelrahman, the Egyptian ambassador to South Korea, stated that "Cairo is on the verge of signing a contract with Seoul for up to 100 FA-50 light combat aircraft" and that "the contract will also include technology transfer."

A representative from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) explained that this procurement "will advance Egypt's aviation industry and strengthen strategic partnerships across Africa and the Middle East."

According to industry analysts, Egypt is expected to initially order 36 aircraft worth approximately $1 billion, followed by additional acquisitions. If the full order of 100 aircraft is completed, around 70 units are reportedly planned to be produced locally in Helwan, Egypt. KAI had previously signed a related agreement with Egypt’s state-owned Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) in early 2023.

The FA-50 is a light combat aircraft with 70% parts compatibility with Lockheed Martin’s F-16, and it is set to replace the Egyptian military’s aging Alpha Jets and K-8E trainers. It is notable for its ability to perform both light combat and advanced training roles simultaneously.
