Between 2021 and 2023, @Eight8World provided Unconditional Cash Transfers #UCT to the inhabitants of a village located in an artisanal mining zone in the province of Maniema #DRC.
IPIS studied the impact of UCT on the living conditions of recipients 🧵:

Through a controlled study, IPIS evaluated key indicators related to the socio-economic, physical, and mental well-being of UCT recipients.
After 2 years, substantial changes were observed for several key factors in the UCT village, including:
➖ housing
➖ health
➖ diet variety
The study confirms a significant increase in households living with metal roofs and gaining access to electricity in the UCT village. While at baseline, access to electricity was highly comparable in both villages, several UCT beneficiaries invested in batteries and solar panels.
The number of respondents feeling healthy or very healthy increased substantially in the UCT village. Results also showed a strong increase in the proportion of inhabitants able to buy medication.
Interestingly, artisanal miners also invested in protective mining equipment during the UCT programme. More than 70% of miners in the UCT village were wearing rubber boots while mining at the time of the endline survey.
The results strongly suggest that the intervention has a positive effect on the socio-economic well-being of UCT recipients. Moreover, it seems that people have spent the mobile money they received unconditionally with the intention of improving their socio-economic well-being.
Some key insights:
- At least two meals per day for every person
- Increased investment in protective equipment for miners
- Improved housing conditions
- Diversification of economic activities
- Every child has access to necessary medication
