IMAX 70mm is undeniably impressive from a technical standpoint. But I’m not convinced it’s the future of cinema.
Its image ratio close to the classic 4:3 format (1.43:1) goes against what I believe is one of the foundations of cinematic storytelling !
Aspect ratio isn’t just about showing more of the image. It’s a creative choice.
Take CinemaScope, for example. Its wide frame forces directors to compose differently. The frame becomes a creative constraint: it demands deliberate choices, guides the audience’s eye, and gives a film a distinct visual identity.
With a frame as tall as IMAX 70mm, I sometimes feel we’re seeing more rather than seeing better. Having more image doesn’t automatically create stronger compositions. In many cases, creative constraints lead to more thoughtful filmmaking.
The future of cinema isn’t just about making the image bigger. It’s about making every frame matter.
A square screen, no matter how big it is, holds no appeal for me
