I've looked at making U235 safe since Olympic Dam but there was always a set of circumstances where disaster unfolded. Check it out

@Peter_Fitz I'd like to introduce you to Thorium Liquid Salt Reactors, it's a waste product of Li mining.
Unlike U235 (238) it's fissile, & it's not got the High Pressure Water cooling problems.

Thorium = U235 = Coal
1 : 300 : 3,000,000 energy equivalent.

@Peter_Fitz Plus an educational programme that distinguishes the reactors from U235 & scare mungering. It's not perfected as yet, but huge potential. In SA it'll power desalination, green energy, green mineral, base power, strip carbonic acid from seawater (CO2) & Green Hydrogen

You can disable the safety system (most) & it'll solidify as it cools reactor self stabilities.

Big issue Lithium though is will react with most things, continuing eating away at stuff - there's engineering & R&D needed

@Peter_Fitz A local ship building yard can knock one out in 18 to 24 months, fit on an 1/2 acre block. Does produce Plutonium, but does Nuclear Medical (Imaging, oncology), deep space (battery). Speaking of Plutonium & Nuclear Medical waste it can burn that.
