.@ICEgov arrested Edgar Chacon-Miranda in Santa Fe, and @NMDEMS immediately erupted in outrage over the arrest.

What they left out: Chacon-Miranda was previously charged with rape, domestic violence and child abuse. Those charges never went to trial because prosecutors failed to move the case forward.

This is the result of years of soft-on-crime leadership. Serious cases fall apart, victims are failed, and dangerous allegations never get their day in court.

Now Democrats are attacking ICE instead of demanding answers for how a case this serious was allowed to collapse. Their outrage is aimed at law enforcement, while the alleged victim and children are treated like an afterthought.

That is a disgraceful set of priorities, and New Mexicans should remember exactly who Democrats chose to stand up for.

An idea for my friends at the NM GOP.

New Mexico has an opportunity most states could only dream of: enormous permanent funds, record energy revenues, and the ability to fundamentally change how we tax our economy.

It’s time to start talking about a 10-year plan to ELIMINATE New Mexico’s state Gross Receipts Tax.

Here’s how:

➡️ Immediately eliminate GRT on legitimate business to business transactions. Stop taxing businesses simply for doing business with other New Mexico businesses.

➡️ Reduce the state GRT rate roughly half a point at a time over the next decade, eventually taking the state rate to ZERO.

➡️ Cap the growth of recurring state spending and force government to live within sustainable revenue growth instead of creating new permanent spending every time oil revenues surge.

➡️ Review tax credits, subsidies, and special-interest carveouts. If an incentive isn’t producing measurable jobs or investment, taxpayers shouldn’t be financing it.

➡️ Protect the principal of our permanent funds while using responsible growth in investment distributions to reduce our dependence on GRT.

➡️ Put excess oil and gas revenue into permanent and stabilization funds instead of building bigger government around temporary boom-year revenues.

➡️ Protect cities and counties during the transition so police, firefighters, roads, and essential local services aren’t suddenly left without funding.

➡️ If replacement revenue is still necessary, transition toward a very low tax on FINAL retail consumption not a system that taxes businesses repeatedly throughout the production chain.

And every scheduled tax reduction would have fiscal safeguards. If revenues or reserves fall below predetermined levels, the next reduction pauses rather than creating a budget crisis.

The goal isn't to replace every dollar of GRT with another tax.

The goal is to NEED LESS TAX REVENUE while growing the private economy.

Imagine being able to tell companies across America:

Come to New Mexico.

Build here.
Hire here.
Invest here.

No state GRT on business to business transactions. Eventually, no state Gross Receipts Tax at all. Lower costs to hire workers. A responsible state government backed by one of the strongest permanent-fund systems in America.

Instead of politicians deciding which companies deserve special tax breaks, let's build a tax system that makes New Mexico competitive for EVERY business.

Texas shouldn't automatically win the next factory, corporate headquarters, technology company, or major expansion.

Let's compete.

Let's grow the private sector.

Let's make New Mexico one of the best states in America to start a business, hire a worker, and invest.

That's how you build an economy for the next generation not by continuously raising taxes to pay for continuously bigger government.
