Step 1: Know your notice period. Before doing anything, check your contract:
• 2 weeks? 1 month? 3 months?
• Can you pay in lieu of notice?
• Any penalties for early exit?
Know your rights before you move.
Step 2: Tell your boss FIRST (in person). Not:
❌ Colleagues
❌ Work friends
❌ Team WhatsApp
❌ Email or text
Request a private meeting:
"Hi [Name], could we have a quick chat? I have something important to discuss"
Step 3: The resignation conversation. Keep it short, respectful & positive. Suggested script:
"Thank you for meeting with me. I wanted to let you know that I’ve accepted another opportunity and will be resigning from my role. My last working day will be [date], based on my notice period. I’m grateful for the opportunities here, especially [specific learning or achievement]. I’m committed to ensuring a smooth transition and will document my work and assist with handover"
What they might say: "Can we make a counteroffer?"
Only consider if:
• You actually want to stay
• The reasons you’re leaving can be fixed
• You trust there won’t be resentment later
