Researchers at Paris-based @EligoBio have engineered a phage-derived vector to deliver a base editor and modify E. coli while they are colonizing the mouse gut. Learn more: https://t.co/0nFRWPqzwA
1/ 🧵 Thrilled to share work of @EligoBio just published in @Nature ! We show proof of principle results of efficient base editing performed on E. coli directly in the mouse gut 🦠💡 #Microbiome#SyntheticBiology https://t.co/efTztuluN9

In an article published moments ago in Nature, the company demonstrates for the first time ever that it is possible to target a bacterial genome with extreme precision and efficiency in the gut of a living mouse.
Speaking with CRISPR Medicine News, Eligo Bioscience' CEO Xavier Duportet said:
»It's really the first time we can envision creating therapies that can precisely inactivate the bacterial gene(s) driving disease while having close to no impact on microbiome composition and function. This could be a paradigm shift, switching from microbiome therapies to gene-editing therapies targeting bacterial genes - this strategy broadens the landscape of addressable therapeutic targets in the gene-editing field«.

With this work we show that the targeted mutagenesis of gut bacteria in situ - something that was inconceivable before - can actually be done!
There is now an exciting road ahead for @EligoBio to develop first in class drugs based on this strategy. #ImmunoInflammation#Oncology
🚀 Very excited to share this work from our amazing scientists at @EligoBio.
🧬 We show that targeted mutations can be introduced with high efficiency directly in the gut microbiome - even without the need for selection!
Thread below... https://t.co/ynQoAsNJFC
💯 Experiments in a mouse model of E.coli gut colonization showed indeed that up to 99.7% of target bacteria can be edited, without selection and without maintenance of a transgene.
⌛️Edits remain stable for at least 42 days!!!! (more data to come…)
Hello microbiology and molecular biology students in the EU! Are you looking for an internship to improve your lab skills while making meaningful contributions to exciting new drug projects? Eligo wants to hear from you, we are recruiting! https://t.co/dB7Pk0XQzy #microbiome
It's an exciting day at Eligo! We have presented data demonstrating that our lead drug candidate, EB003, could alleviate symptoms in 100% of treated animals in a disease-relevant model.
