Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani (24) and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi (27) were publicly executed in connection with the January 2026 uprising.

Nach 16 Tagen Hungerstreik von rund 1.500 zum Tode verurteilten Gefangenen in Trakt 2 des Ghezel-Hesar-Gefängnisses musste das Regime nachgeben. Die Vollstreckung der Todesurteile wurde vorerst ausgesetzt. Sechs bereits zur Hinrichtung in Einzelhaft verlegte Gefangene sollen in die Gemeinschaftszellen zurückgebracht werden.

Zudem sollen die Fälle aller Todestrakt-Gefangenen dieses Trakts innerhalb von sechs Monaten überprüft werden. Die Gefangenen machten jedoch deutlich: Sollte das Regime seine Zusagen brechen, werden sie den Hungerstreik wieder aufnehmen.

Nationaler Widerstadnsrat Iran #NWRI gratuliert den streikenden Gefangenen. Dieser Erfolg zeigt, welche Kraft Einheit, Entschlossenheit und Widerstand selbst gegenüber dem Repressions- und Hinrichtungsapparat des Regimes entfalten können. I am encouraged by the reported outcome of the Ghezelhesar prison strike -- a 16-day prisoner strike resulting in the suspension of drug executions, even if only temporarily.

Prisoners under State control spoke truth to power, their voices carried by those beyond the prison in and outside Iran. Other peaceful resistance, such as the ‘No to Executions Tuesdays’ campaign, continues — even as executions carry on in other prisons for a range of offences, including drug-related offences and against those who took part in the Dec/Jan nationwide protests.

This week, executions continued across the country against protesters, including public hangings of protesters. Those who remain, many of them young men in their teens and early 20s, face imminent execution.

An amendment to Iran’s Narcotics Law, which could reduce the number executed for drug offences — estimated at around half of all executions carried out in Iran — has been in the pipeline since last year and remains on the State’s agenda.

If there is genuine will among the authorities to reduce drug-related executions, pending abolition, there is no reason this development in Ghezelhesar prison cannot be extended nationwide.
