Mayor, my grandparents were expelled from their land too. I have deep sympathy for the many Palestinians who experienced that.

I’m not going to debate who was responsible.

My grandmother fled North Africa and Iraq after the Farhud of 1941. Six years before any war over Israel. Palestinians were expelled during a war Arab states launched against us.

Over 850,000 Jews were driven from Arab lands. Almost none remain.

Maybe the mayor of New York should stay out of it. Or speak to both. Don’t weaponize one trauma while actively erasing another.

Why are there Palestinian refugees?

In the months before the British abandoned its mandate & Israel declared independence, civil war raged as Arab factions tried to prevent the Jewish state from being born.

Of course, had the Arabs agreed to the UN's partition plan, they would have had yet another state & there would have been no war in 1948.

But their goal was not another Arab state; it was to ensure there would be no Jewish state.

Meanwhile, 5 #Arab armies amassed on the borders & waited for the British to leave so they could push the Jews into the #Mediterranean Sea.

As Secretary-General of the Arab League Azzam Pasha put it on the day of the Arab #invasion:

"This will be a war of extermination & momentous massacre, which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the Crusades."

Or as the then war #criminal & fugitive #Nazi Grand Mufti Amin al-Husseini put it during the invasion:

"Murder the #Jews. Murder them all!"

But before the invasion began, & starting as early as Dec 1947, Arab officers began ordering Arab residents of specific villages to flee.

Their reasoning? Arab citizens not involved in active fighting could only: (1) "treacherously" abide the creation of a the Jewish state &/or even become citizens of same; or (2) be in the way of Arab #military deployments & potentially get caught in the crossfire.

And so, for example, on this day (March 8) in 1948, the Arab Higher Committee ordered all Arab women, children & elderly to leave Jerusalem. The order continued, "Any opposition to this order ... is an obstacle to the holy war ... & will hamper the operations of the fighters in these districts.”

In fact, the Arab Higher Committee ordered the evacuation of dozens of Arab villages between April & July of 1948 (see photo of Arab citizens fleeing below).

Meanwhile, on April 19, 1948, Jewish forces secured Tiberias, which had a population of ~6,000 #Arabs - all of whom chose to leave. In fact, they left under British military supervision.

The Jewish Community Council immediately issued a statement regarding Tiberias' Arabs:

"We did not dispossess them; they themselves chose this course ... Let no citizen touch their property."

At around this same time, in early & mid-April of 1948, an Arab faction led by Fawzi al-Qawukji was attacking Haifa & attempting to take the city. Then, rumors spread among Haifa's Arab community that Arab air forces were about to bomb the city & ~25,000 of Haifa's Arabs fled.

As U.S. Consul-General in Haifa Aubrey Lippincott noted on April 22, 1948: "local mufti-dominated Arab leaders ... [urged] all Arabs to leave the city, & large numbers did so."

On April 23, 1948, however, #Jewish forces fought back the Arab attack & retook Haifa.

Three days later, on April 26, 1948, a British police report from Haifa noted:

"[E]very effort is being made by the Jews to persuade the Arab populace to stay and carry on with their normal lives, to get their shops and businesses open and to be assured that their lives and interests will be safe."

What were some of those "efforts?"

Israel's first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, sent future Prime Minister Golda Meir to Haifa with the direct instructions to "persuade the Arabs to stay."

Ms. Meir was unsuccessful, however, as Haifa's Arabs told her they feared that if they stayed, they would be branded "#traitors."

And so, another ~25,000 of Haifa's Arabs fled.

Stop me if you've heard this one before, but despite facts on the ground, Arab leaders at the #UN began demanding the end to a fake "#massacre."

Specifically, #Syria's UN Ambassador Faris al-Kouri, said the Jewish victory at Haifa was a "massacre" that provided "evidence that the '#Zionist program' is to annihilate Arabs within the Jewish state if partition is effected."

The #British were still on the ground, however, & the British Ambassador to the UN, Sir Alexander Cadogan, told the UN the very next day both that the fighting in Haifa had only begun as a result of "continuous attacks by Arabs against Jews" & that the "reports of massacres & deportations [were] erroneous."

Meanwhile, after Israel declared its independence & was invaded by five Arab armies, the newly established #IDF issued an Order on July 6, 1948, making it clear that non-combatant Arab civilians were not to be harassed or expelled, nor their villages touched.

But the Arabs were being given a very different message.

#Iraqi #PrimeMinister Nuri Said announced:

"We will smash the country with our guns & obliterate every place the Jews seek shelter in. The Arabs should conduct their wives & children to safe areas until the fighting has died down."

This used to be known. In fact, Arab leaders for years after the war had no qualms about repeating it.

For example, Syrian Prime Minister Haled al Azm later wrote:

"Since 1948, we have been demanding the return of the #refugees to their homes. But we ourselves are the ones who encouraged them to leave. Only a few months separated our call to them to leave & our appeal to the UN to resolve on their return."

Similarly, #Jordan's King Abdullah wrote:

"The tragedy of the #Palestinians was that most of their leaders had paralyzed them with false & unsubstantiated promises that they were not alone; that 80 million Arabs & 400 million #Muslims would instantly & miraculously come to their rescue."

Similarly, Edward Atiyah, Secretary of the Arab League Office in #London wrote:

"This wholesale #exodus was due partly to the belief of the Arabs, encouraged by the boastings of an unrealistic #Arabic press & the irresponsible utterances of some of the Arab leaders that it could be only a matter of weeks before the Jews were defeated by the armies of the Arab States & the #Palestinian Arabs enabled to re­enter & retake possession of their country.”

Even as the war still raged on Aug 16, 1948, the Arab #Greek Orthodox Catholic Bishop of the Galilee told #Beirut newspaper Sada al-Janub:

“The refugees were confident their absence would not last long, & that they would return within a week or two ... Their leaders had promised them that the Arab Armies would crush the ’Zionist gangs’ very quickly & that there was no need for panic or fear of a long exile.”

A few months later, on Feb 19, 1949, the Jordanian newspaper Filastin confirmed:

"The Arab States encouraged the Palestine Arabs to leave their homes temporarily in order to be out of the way of the Arab invasion armies."

Even many of the Palestinian Arab refugees themselves admitted their reasons for leaving.

For example, on June 8, 1951, Habib Issa admitted to #NewYork Lebanese newspaper Al Hoda:

"Azzam Pasha assured the Arab peoples that the #occupation of Palestine & #TelAviv would be ... simple ... He pointed out that they were already on the frontiers & that all the millions the Jews had spent on land & economic development would be easy booty, for it would be a simple matter to throw Jews into the Mediterranean ... Arabs of Palestine [were told] to leave their land, homes & property & to stay temporarily in neighboring fraternal states, lest the guns of the invading Arab armies mow them down.”

Similarly, Asmaa Jabir Balasimah recalled being told by Arab leaders to "evacuate the village & return after the battle is over," & that she & others in her village left all their possessions behind "based on the assumption that we would return after a few hours."

Again, however (& most importantly), had the Arabs agreed to Partition or even agreed to negotiate different borders with Zionist leaders who begged Azzam Pasha to make any counteroffer instead of invading with #genocidal intent, there would never have been a single Palestinian #refugee.

Elle écarte expressément le crime contre l’humanité d’extermination, jugeant que ses éléments constitutifs ne sont pas réunis. Quant au génocide, il n’est même pas requis par le Procureur.

Deuxième rappel. En avril 2026, le procureur de la CPI Karim Khan, devant Mehdi Hasan, confirme qu’il n’a pas requis le génocide et ne le fera qu’à la condition d’en réunir les preuves. « No crime is off limits if the evidence is there. » Traduction : à ce jour, ces preuves n’existent pas.

Et ici il faut comprendre ce que signifie réellement cette absence. Au stade du mandat d’arrêt, l’article 58 du Statut de Rome n’exige que des reasonable grounds to believe, le seuil probatoire le plus bas du Statut, très en-deçà des substantial grounds de la confirmation des charges, et sans commune mesure avec le beyond reasonable doubt du procès. La Chambre d’appel l’a même solennellement abaissé dans l’affaire Al-Bashir, le 3 février 2010, censurant la Chambre préliminaire qui avait osé exiger davantage. Résultat : un second mandat délivré le 12 juillet 2010 contre le président soudanais, pour trois chefs de génocide.

La CPI dispose d’un standard probatoire minimal, jurisprudentiellement abaissé, pour retenir le génocide au stade du mandat. Et même à ce seuil-là, pourtant taillé au plus juste, le Procureur n’y est pas. Pas pour Israël.

Reste l’épreuve des faits. Les chiffres récemment ventilés par le Hamas lui-même, achèvent de défaire le récit. Sur environ 70 000 décès, près de 25 000 combattants, 10 000 morts naturelles, et plusieurs milliers de morts imputables à des roquettes palestiniennes défaillantes, à des exécutions internes ou à des affrontements intergroupes.
Le ratio démographique de trois hommes en âge de combattre pour une femme contredit frontalement la thèse des frappes indiscriminées au sens du droit international humanitaire. Une armée qui commet un génocide ne tue pas trois fois plus d’hommes mobilisables que de femmes. Surtout que, avant le 7 octobre, la population gazaouie était majoritairement composée de femmes et d’enfants.

Alors disons-le sans détour. L’accusation de génocide portée contre Israël ne tient ni devant les juges, ni devant le Procureur censé la formuler, ni devant les chiffres de l’ennemi lui-même. Ce qui en reste n’est pas du droit. C’est un slogan. Un slogan articulé par des militants qui ont compris que le mot « génocide » est l’arme rhétorique la plus puissante du siècle, et qui s’en servent précisément parce qu’il ne s’applique pas.

Le génocide est un crime juridiquement défini par la Convention de 1948. Il exige la preuve d’un dolus specialis, l’intention spécifique de détruire un groupe comme tel.

Aucune juridiction internationale ne l’a constaté à l’égard d’Israël. La CIJ, en janvier 2024, n’a statué que sur la « plausibilité » d’un risque, ce qui n’est ni une qualification, ni une condamnation, ni même un commencement de preuve. C’est de la pure procédure.

Le reste n’est pas du droit international. C’est de la guerre par d’autres moyens, menée avec les mots du droit pour mieux les retourner contre lui. En clair, du militantisme.

In a hyperinflationary environment, the single most important financial decision you can make, and the one almost nobody who lives through one is psychologically prepared to make, is to maximize fixed-rate, long-duration debt against productive assets, because the entire mechanism of hyperinflation is a wealth transfer from creditors to debtors, and the only question that matters, in the moment it begins, is which side of that transfer you have positioned yourself on.

The math is brutal in its simplicity. If you owe a bank $400,000 at a 30-year fixed rate of 6%, and the currency loses 90% of its purchasing power over five years, you are, in real terms, paying back the bank in lottery tickets. The house you bought with that loan retains its real value, because it is a physical asset that the inflation cannot touch. The bank, which lent you future dollars and is now receiving past dollars, takes the loss. You take the gain. The transfer happens silently, invisibly, on the loan amortization schedule, every single month, while the people around you who saved in cash, held bonds, or refused on principle to take on debt watch their lifetime savings evaporate in real time.

The Weimar industrialists who emerged from 1923 with their fortunes intact, and in many cases multiplied, were not the ones who hoarded gold or moved their assets to Switzerland. They were the ones who borrowed aggressively, in the local currency, at fixed rates, against factories and farms and apartment buildings, and let the inflation pay off the debt while they collected rents and revenues that repriced upward with the currency. The same pattern played out in Hungary in 1946, in Argentina in the 1980s, in Zimbabwe in 2008, and in every other major inflation event of the modern era. The borrowers won. The savers lost. The people in the middle, who tried to be cautious and hold cash and wait for clarity, were the ones whose lives were quietly destroyed.

The reason almost nobody acts on this knowledge in advance is that the human brain treats debt as danger, and treats saving as safety, and these instincts are correct in stable monetary environments and exactly inverted in unstable ones. The middle class, which has been trained for generations to fear debt, is structurally the worst-positioned group when the currency starts to fail. The wealthy, who use leverage as a tool, and who hold the productive assets that the leverage was used to acquire, are structurally the best-positioned. The asymmetry is not an accident. It is the entire mechanism by which monetary debasement transfers wealth from one class to another, every time it has happened, in every country it has happened in, for as long as currencies have existed.

You do not need to predict the timing. You need to structure your balance sheet, in the years before the event, in a way that benefits if it arrives. Fixed rate, long duration, productive assets. The trade has worked for 400 years. It will work for the next 400. Almost nobody will run it, because almost nobody is willing to be the person who took on debt while everyone they know was paying theirs down, which is, as it has always been, the entire reason the people who do run it end up owning everything on the other side.

Winston Churchill fought his depression with bricks. He'd lay them for hours at his country home in Kent. He joined the bricklayers' union. And in 1921 he wrote about why it worked. It took psychology another 75 years to catch up.

He called his depression the "Black Dog." It followed him for decades. His method for fighting it back was as basic as it sounds: laying brick after brick, hour after hour.

Churchill spelled out his theory in a long essay for The Strand Magazine. People who think for a living, he wrote, can't fix a tired brain just by resting it. They have to use a different part of themselves. The part that moves the eyes and the hands. Woodworking, chemistry, bookbinding, bricklaying, painting. Anything that drags the body into a problem the mind can't solve by itself.

Modern psychology now calls this behavioral activation. It's one of the most-studied depression treatments out there. Depression sets a behavior trap. You feel bad, so you stop doing things, and doing less means less to feel good about. Feeling worse makes you do even less. The loop tightens until you can't breathe inside it.

Behavioral activation breaks the loop from the action side. You schedule the activity first, even when every part of you doesn't want to. Doing it produces small rewards: a wall gets straighter, a painting fills in, a messy room gets clean. Those small rewards slowly rewire the brain. Action comes first, and the feeling follows.

Researchers at the University of Washington put this to the test in 2006. They studied 241 adults with major depression and compared three treatments: behavioral activation, regular talk therapy, and antidepressants. For the people who were most severely depressed, behavioral activation matched the drugs. It beat the talk therapy. A 2014 review of more than 1,500 patients across 26 trials backed up the result.

Physical work like bricklaying does something extra on top of this. It crowds out rumination, the looping bad thoughts that grind people down during the worst stretches of depression. Bricklaying needs both hands and gives feedback brick by brick: each one is straight or crooked. After an hour you can see exactly how much wall you built. No room left for the mental chewing.

The line George Mack used in his post, "depression hates a moving target," is good poetry. The science behind it is sharper. Depression hates a brain that has somewhere else to be.
