Somewhere between the middle/end of Kindergarten many children can be identified as at risk for reading failure.

However, the Ed system is not designed or equipped to do so and instead it is more aligned with the “wait and see” approach.

The problem is that when it comes to reading struggles the “gift of time” is a myth and that the longer we wait to provide kids with the supports and intervention, they need and deserve the harder it will be for them to close the reading gap between them and their grade level peers.

That is why kids’ best hope to prevent/overcome reading struggles is an informed teacher or an informed parent who is able to advocate for their kids in school and is able to support their child’s reading development outside of the school system if necessary.

Kids should not have to win the zip code lottery, or teacher lottery to receive the type of reading instruction they need and deserve.
