@alexanderrX_ It’s not any different in the US, and US politics are more messed up than Britain’s. Congress has elections every two years, and also has by-elections (“special elections”). President has threat of impeachment, though Congress is too deranged to use it on Trump
@MarcusMStanley@phl43 The Gulf will draw *closer* to the US because of this, even if they hate it. Because now they need US security more than ever. MBS just told Trump to stay the course on Iran - he knows they need to weaken Iran as much as possible, and that KSA should stay close to the US
@Confusezeus@Indian_Bronson@TuckerCarlson The idea that the US is uniquely bureaucratic is simply wrong. Litigious, yes. Uk govt websites are excellent, the tax system is more transparent than ours - but Brits are prone to administrative dithering and box-ticking and a lot less action-oriented than the US
The left in Europe is so used to reflexively pushing back against any reform of the welfare state/pension system that they don't realize that, in doing so, they're now actually actively redistributing towards the older and wealthier haves, away from the younger, poorer have-nots. They should study the demographics.
@Noahpinion Your obsession with the UK is a mind virus Noah. Please stop posting it’s just so embarrassing
It is very easy to get from terminal 2 to terminal 5 if you follow the transfer signs. For some reason you left the terminal - happens to the best of us, but that’s on you
@John_Stepek@Noahpinion It’s bc of Musk’s obsession with UK and the weird discourse that’s developed around it. Noah has no idea why he’s interested, it’s what the algo shows him. As someone who spends lots of time in UK, US, and EU, UK is not doing much worse than the others. US is most dystopian atm
@GoodwinMJ It was always thus. Per Great Expectations:
“Is [London] a very wicked place?” I asked.
“You may get cheated, robbed, and murdered, in London…They’ll do it, if there’s anything to be got by it.”
Pip is floored by terrible infrastructure and filth everywhere. Sound familiar?
@Crowenation4547@DOGE__news You have no idea how this works. First of all it’s “renounce” not “denounce”. Second of all it costs a lot of money to renounce, because the IRS wants you to keep paying taxes
All the focus on tariffs being a haphazardly implemented policy that are failing at their stated goals while making life worse for everyone has distracted from DOGE being a haphazardly implemented policy that is failing at the stated goals while making life worse for everyone.
We've gone from:
"Vote Trump to end Bidenflation and bring down prices," to
"Ok, Trump will raise prices even higher, but that's the price of loyalty to our dear leader."
No fewer than 7 projects (NSF, DoD, DoA) I am personally reviewing, assisted with funding, or have commercial interest in have been informed to "stop" or "hold" all work. Four involve advanced computing. Two in aerospace innovation. One in insect biology. The stupid is winning.
1/ After residency at Mass General Hospital, I reported to Atlanta to meet my fellow CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Officers.
I have never felt so intimidated by my peers
The best and the brightest, they were star clinicians, had served in disaster zones; MD/PhDs and MSF.
