@edzitron 30 year SW industry vet here, and I believe the CEOs are def. con men. BUT: these tools can do amazing things. And a 95%-right 5x coding multiplier has value if used by someone wise enough to guide it and call out its BS. Maybe even worth 2x a devs salary if product ships faster.
If AI had ROI, we’d be talking about outputs in qualitative terms, rather than speed or lines of code
I'd actually argue that AI has had a negative economic impact on software engineering, weakening companies' codebases and dulling the senses of SWEs.

So, there is no doubt that the LLM tools we use in our SW shop have sped up our ability to safely produce functionality; an easy 2x. The question is if the true cost is <2x? SW team scaling has always been an expensive endeavor. LLMs may solve the 9women+1month baby problem.
This is the con of generative AI. Artificial intelligence that is not intelligent, that's inherently unreliable, and its value and ROI is impossible to measure.
The fact that I need to make this case shows how well the con has worked.

"Social modernity, in the end, is really about not having to do what your family tells you to do—marrying whom you want, taking the job you want, and spending your earnings the way you want. There is something cold about this, of course, but also something deeply emancipating." I knew about the insanely extravagant weddings in rural India that keep people poor, but not about "how funerals keep Africa poor." - David Oks https://t.co/MrEMcwjylN
@SimplyAJ10 When I took over as commissioner for our local rec baseball league, the former commish gave this advice: remember that all the crazy rules we have are aimed at dealing with the parents; the kids are fine! It was true: if parents weren’t at games, 99% of problems disappear.
@JacobsVegasLife Why don’t locals want me to know about it? Tourists could subsidize their cheaper groceries!
(Aside: this is why casinos should be illegal everywhere except Vegas. Let them have all the glitz AND the sadness.)
Zillow staffers are pushed to use AI for every conceivable task (thus ratcheting up token burn), creating endless busywork at a massive cost to a company that is on course to spend more than $7 million a year on AI that has produced no measurable ROI.

@jcalvinmeyer@JConnSports I had that exact thought tonight… the only thing that explains a dude going from amazing to dreadful. If they know what’s coming, you’re toast. O’s org seems lost to figure things like this out. Exhausting.
@EmoPhilips DMV: Go see this man. So funny, and even better in person. A refreshing palate cleanser from the anger out there (even in comedy.) Nothing better than laughing with friends and strangers!
The only bacon the “Save Our Bacon Act” is actually saving is China’s.
This isn’t just a states’ rights issue or an animal welfare issue, it’s a national security issue. China already controls roughly 25% of the American pork industry. Why would Congress pass legislation that further strengthens Beijing’s grip on America’s food supply?
The pork industry lost with voters. Lost at the Supreme Court. So they turned to Congress—and got the "Save Our Bacon" Act buried in the House Farm Bill. It's the biggest rollback of animal welfare protections in U.S. history. A thread. 🧵
