Potato fields bordered by a simple strip sown with 11 annual flower species had 75% fewer potato aphids compared to fields without such a flower strip.

The Potato aphid is a pernicious insect pest that damages crops by feeding on nutrients and water and by transmitting viruses—ultimately causing significant yield losses.

Due to an overreliance on chemical controls, potato aphids have developed resistance to insecticides, and, in most cases, they are impervious to conventional insecticides.

By providing a habitat for predatory insects like hoverflies and ladybugs, flower strips maintain potato aphid incidence below the damage threshold, at which point insecticide intervention would be required to save the harvest.

Flower strips can save farmers money as they reduce the need for pesticide inputs while also providing a necessary solution for those pests like the potato aphid that have developed resistance to insecticides.
