At a moment when people feel morally unmoored—and when young Americans, in particular, are starving for purpose, connection, and something to believe in—Pope Leo offers clarity, compassion, and a moral anchor. A normal leader would embrace the Pope’s message in these troubling times, not engage in divisive, degrading, and destructive ridicule. But that may be too much to ask from President Trump and Vice President Vance.
Americans of all faiths and walks of life are hungry for His Holiness’s message of the humanity in us all.
"I'm just contemplating the fact that one moron, one psychotic moron, one capricious idiot, has completely bollocksed up the global economy not only to the detriment of his own people, but the detriment of the planet. ... It's like how much more of this can the planet take?"
The global suicide rate has fallen since the 1990s, but the death toll is still high—
Even after years of working with global health data, one statistic that I’m always struck by is the number of people who die by suicide every year. In 2023, it was estimated to be around three-quarters of a million.
That means suicides account for more than 1 in every 100 deaths in the world.
But a world where so many die from suicide is not inevitable. We know this because global suicide rates have fallen by an estimated 40% since the 1990s.
You can see this in the chart: rates have fallen from 15 to 9 deaths per 100,000 people over the last thirty years.
The large differences between countries also suggest that there are things that can be done to reduce this number even further.

"Trump, the Mar-a-Lago golfer, is the only bull in the world who walks around with his own china shop. When a clown takes over the Palace, he doesn't become King. It's the Palace that becomes a circus"
French senator Claude Malhuret once again nails it. You won't hear a better indictment of Trump and his Gulf war than this. Well worth 5 minutes of your time

My fellow Americans, tonight I stand before you to report that under my leadership, measles is back like never before. Some people are saying they’ve never seen measles like this.
They said measles was gone, folks. The experts, the so‑called experts, they said it was eliminated. But not on my watch. We brought it back, and we brought it back strong.
We had sleepy measles, failing measles. Now we have winning measles. Very powerful numbers, incredible numbers, record numbers, quite frankly.
They have known measles for many, many years; it’s not something new, believe me, but nobody has made measles respected again like we have.
Some people call it a problem. I call it a tremendous opportunity. The fake news won’t tell you this, but measles is hot again. Measles is respected again. We did that.
Just watched a video where a woman writer shared how her mum came over to help. Her mum did all the housework, laundry, cooking, cleaning, and childcare so she could focus. During her mum’s stay, writer TRIPLED her daily word count.
Then she said something that hit hard.
Most men have this kind of support their entire lives. Next time you call a man productive, consider that.
Damn. Still letting it sink in.
"When we see an athlete stumble and find the strength to rise, we are reminded that we can do the same. When we see rivals embrace at the finish line, we are reminded that we can choose respect."

For the first time in more than half a century, we face a world without any binding limits on the strategic nuclear arsenals of Russia & the US.
I urge both States to return to the negotiating table without delay & to agree upon a successor framework that restores verifiable limits, reduces risks & strengthens our common security.
