At the far end of Aldridge House’s main hall, two staff members carefully unwrapped a large, vibrant painting and mounted it at the center of the wall. It depicted a couple: the man gazed lovingly at the woman, while she stared directly—unblinkingly—at the viewer.

“She’s so gorgeous…” one of them murmured, his eyes lingering on her figure with a hunger he didn’t bother to hide. “I wonder why the Marchioness barely leaves her room anymore. They looked so in love.”

“Shh! Don’t talk about the Marchioness—we don’t want the Marquess hearing us,” the other hissed, glancing nervously down the corridor. “Didn’t you hear what happened to David? From the stables? He was caught lurking near her window, trying to get a glimpse…”

He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. “Last I heard, he vanished. The butler said he went home—but his things are still in his room.”

A cold chill ran up their spines. Ever since the death of the previous Marquess Aldridge, his son Percival had taken over the estate. Everyone had noticed the coldness between him and his wife—a strange, lingering void that seemed to hover constantly between them. Some whispered it was the weight of responsibility pressing down on the young Marquess; others blamed the growing pressure placed on the Marchioness to produce an heir. But whatever the reason, no one dared to ask. Not here. Not in this house.
