High School Social Studies NBCT & EOU College of Ed: Tech & Social Studies Methods - Background: Instructional Coach, Dev Ed FYE, 1:1 high access schools
@BryanAlexander This is what we did at EOU last year and I think the same this year. In my classes, it was only an issue once with a student who didn’t know the new rules. Easily fixed.
Jumping right to real world “sticky note planning” would leave T prep Ss in the dust. Scaffolding & reflection are critical in lesson design. Just like writing, I have Ss focus on specific skills that build over time instead of all at once. We also explore “real world templates.”
This is such an important point: ”All teachers are not the same.” How do we help teachers, especially novice teachers, find the planning framework (and level of detail) that will help them and their learners experience success?

Good discussion & food for thought here. I try to emphasize to Ss that what we do in T prep has a different purpose (building teaching & reflection skills) than “real” lesson plans (like training wheels). I am curious about the thoughts of those who deal with details of edTPA?
Dear Teacher Educator,
Please quit calling the 10+ page paper you’re asking pre-service teachers to write a lesson plan. (Maybe call it a lesson research paper.) It’s ruining their desire to plan lessons (and it’s unsustainable in the real-world).

This is a great film that highlights the educational intentionality of Children’s Television Workshop and the personalities behind this revolutionary show.

BTW- ALL Ts are civic teachers tomorrow. The way we engage Ss voice, the space we make for Ss lived experiences, the norms we employ, the choices we make in content send messages about power, justice & representation. Be an ambassador #sschat friends and help colleagues.
This is NOT the time to have a debate. Dialogue to process current and evolving events are different from current and controversial discussions. It is time to be present, listen, question, and have students do the same. Policy debates come LATER. #sschat
Announcing: a special edition of #sschat where we can process current events and group-source ideas for approaching this historic day in our classes tomorrow.
Attending the 2020 IMESD Virtual Summit today and get to run a session this afternoon. It's fun to get to see a lot of my colleagues in other districts virtually.
