The First Step to Printing Humans Was Made 36 Years Ago

In 1989, Donald Eigler and Erhard Schweizer at IBM used a scanning tunneling microscope to move individual Xenon atoms and formed the word “IBM” – the first proof that humans could deliberately position atoms.

Today, Robert Freitas at the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing is working on his 2024 “Cell Mills” paper, which describes how complete living human cells could be built on a molecular level.

A complete human could be printed this way in 400 to 800 years.
