@demontage2000 @BimboUbermensch As a Gen X nerd, I am curious about this... my nerdy friends and I didn't have THAT much trouble finding girlfriends, but my tall, handsome, athletic son doesn't seem to date that much... not sure what to tell him...
@politicalelle Is there any evidence that policy, as opposed to culture, can encourage marriage? My sense is that attempts to create economic incentives to marry and have children have largely failed...
@JonHaidt At least 75% of "progressives" hire on the basis of ideology-- this isn't always intentional or planned. But once you have a critical mass of progressive ideologues in any academic department, intellectual diversity will decline...
@RadicalLib Giving birth is hard (based on my observations!), but raising kids isn't really that hard most of the time. I found it fun and enjoyable... important to emphasize that part... now, if your kids have health issues that is another story...
@mattyglesias@JDAM_Enjoyer Do Presidents or the national government have much of an impact on murder rates? Leave aside evidence and just give me a plausible theory...
@eugyppius1 @ExplosiveVrat Bureaucratic government could be constrained if courts forced legislators to make fundamental political choices, and if elected executives had a freer hand to remove or discipline recalcitrant members of the civil service. Difficult, but not impossible, within liberal democracy.
@notlouisck One theory: if you stopped mass immgration, wages would have to rise and the cost of housing would... not decline exactly, but the rate of increase would not be as great. With higher wages and steady home prices, larger #s of current Americans would have kids...
@jeremytrimble@GeofMad@mattyglesias The government has no business determining who/what constitutes a human being, and extending legal protections to those beings?
@polanskydj This isn't a new idea (which is fine, it is still worth talking about it. New ideas are usually bad.) I am fairly sure that Charles Murray made similar points ages ago, either in Bell Curve or perhaps Coming Apart.
@wil_da_beast630@RonDeSantis Does DeSantis have a policy-based strategy? In 2016, in a crowded field, Trump won by running on immigration, trade, foreign policy, moderate positions on welfare state and gay marriage. What is DeSantis running on? Education reform, but that is not really a national issue...
By far the best article I have read on the current round of Trump indictments. But it could still be better-- ideally, every single empirical claim should have supporting link and footnote. https://t.co/Cbz0RJBikP
@Athens_Stranger@millerman Fair enough, but in political terms, we are dealing with a kind of decayed and distorted Hegelianism: the "universal class" which sees itself as the vanguard of history, and does not see any need to concern itself with the consent of the governed.
