I try to apologize to my students as often as I can for even the smallest mistakes I make. How will they learn to take accountability for their wrongs if we don’t model what that looks like to them?
Much as doctors practice medicine and lawyers, law, we practice education.
It's a practice.
Purposeful. Professional.
But, practice.
In teaching humans.
And that's gonna take some practice.
Maybe a career's worth.
Practice purposefully.
Practice passionately.
Teach.
When someone tells you they have not read a famous classic book, instead of saying, “I can’t believe you haven’t read it!”, you can say, “I wish I was you and I could read it again for the first time.”
Instead of making people feel inadequate, show them the joys of reading.
This week a kiddo asked why the girls went to the restroom 1st instead of the boys. I told him we went in groups bc there are a lot of us, but 1 of my other boys chimes in and replies “and there is also something called ladies first” and I DIED. This class is just 💗🥹😍
At the end of today, we had an all school prayer service. We gathered in the church & sang & prayed for the start of our school year. When we all sang “this little light of mine” I just felt SO emotional-in a joyful and thankful way. Is this how it feels to finally be “home?” 💗

The system is failing public schools, teachers and students.
Stop saying public schools and teachers are failing students when the system is setting them up to fail.
