2/ This is the goal we have been working towards. It's taken a lot of effort to build that consensus but it represents a huge step forward, and while we know that reform wont happen in a hurry we can at least finally feel confident that it's getting closer.
Many thanks to @HumzaYousaf for his time today and it was a really good meeting. We are to absolutely delighted to have confirmation that there is now a clear cross party commitment to look at reform of corroboration in the new parliament.
On #IWD2021
we're meeting with @HumzaYousaf once again to discuss the ancient law of corroboration, which prevents 90% of sexual offences from ever being prosecuted in Scotland. We have to #ChooseToChallenge this outdated law so that more women might access justice in the future.
#ItsNotOk2021 The ancient Scots law of corroboration means that men in Scotland get special protection from prosecution when women report a rape. In every other country in the world you just need good evidence. Ancient laws to protect men have no place in criminal justice today.
Just a reminder of what passes for "justice" in Scotland:
In 2019/20 there were a reported 13,364 sexual offences
2,343 of these were reported rapes or attempted rapes
Only 324 reached prosecution and just 152 were convicted
This is why Scottish justice urgently needs reform.
#ItsNotOk that Scotland's criminal justice system fails to prosecute almost 90% of reported rapes ⚖
This week is Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week. We stand in solidarity with all survivors, and we ask you to use the #ItsNotOk hashtag to make all our voices heard ✊
@brennajessie_ I've learned that bullies use a subject against a person as a defense mechanism to deflect from something they are struggling with themselves. Don't take that personally. They are the ones that need help to find the reason they are a horrible to someone else. Not you!
Very proud to have been a part of this important project 👏
Also that is one of my favourite photos....survivors don't have to be tragic, you know! In my experience we are a pretty badass bunch, as proven by all who contributed to https://t.co/Uqk1yjLDdW ❤
@JohannLamont From the bottom of my heart Thank You! You stood up for, not only me and my fellow SRG women but all women who needed this. Forever grateful. Your speech has me in tears every time I have watch it. Empowering!
The Forensic Medical Services (Victims of Sexual Offences) (Scotland) Bill has just been passed unanimously in the Debating Chamber.
