The brutal, grim story of the Southport killer demonstrates the enormous challenges that schools have to face. Comprehensive education serves the entirety of society- every angel, scientist, athlete, psychopath and arsonist. The range that spans is vast.
For a student to be permanently excluded at 13 demonstrates how extreme his behaviour was; for his subsequent specialist schools to admit even they couldn't manage his chaotic behaviour only reinforces that.
School staff have enormous expectations put on them by society, and they move mountains on a daily basis. But they aren't miracle workers.

If a student doesn’t have a pen, don’t ‘just give them a pen’.

Instead you could:

-Give them a pen and take note. If it happens again, follow up with a consequence
-Give them a purple pen so it’s easy to show parents days equipment isn’t right
-Teach them how to locate a pen
-Teach them how to pack properly for the day
-Privately, ask if there are any reasons why they aren’t ready
-Record any equipment issues, daily
-Teach them why being organised matters.
-Teach them to bring three pens a day.

Don’t ’just give them a pen.’ You are not Stationery Santa. Don’t teach them to be helpless. Show them you care by teaching them to be independent.
