But h/t @BaltimoreBanner for their coverage of the conduit controversy since 2023. Check out their back catalogue if you want a deep dive on how we got here.
Trying to understand what BGE’s wild announcement on a proposed Baltimore City conduit surcharge was all about? @WYPR881FM has the most spot on story so far.

“The House has been very clear that we want to ban ratemaking based on forecasted test years because it is an important protection for ratepayers,” @PenaMelnykforMD said Friday. “Pepco just proved the point for us.”

“If Pepco gets this current rate increase, their rates will have increased by over 130% just since 2016,” said People’s Counsel David Lapp, who leads the office. “That is really, really fast for a utility.”

“This exact hearing was held the same time last year, on the same topics… Nothing really has changed.” Couldn’t have said it better!
We need to address BGE’s mismanagement, wasteful spending & excessive profits. We should also address rising supply costs. Both can be true.
BGE has declined an invitation from the president of Baltimore's City Council to tonight's hearing, calling it "political theater." The spokesperson said the only change since last year's hearing on the same topic is increased prices.

What we learned from Exelon and BGE’s recent shareholder report. Increased spending is was leads to rate increases and higher profits. Not all spending is bad but customers keep paying more and getting less.
BGE brought in a record breaking $578 million in profits in 2025, a $50 million increase over 2024.
In Annapolis, legislators are considering a variety of bills to address BGE’s mismanagement, excessive spending and excessive profits.

After too many years of advocating for Special Elections (rather than political appointments) to fill legislative vacancies, I am hopeful that we'll finally succeed this session! https://t.co/qFAWGwubUX
For many Marylanders these increased electricity costs are made worse by high deliver rates from utilities who have been spending wastefully, rapidly increasing rates.
Marylanders will face another year of high electricity bills because PJM has blocked clean energy projects from supplying the reliable energy we need. It’s time for PJM to stop putting a thumb on the scale to benefit utilities and dirty power generators.
PJM yesterday voted to approve a $16.4 billion price hike, even as they failed once again to meet capacity demands for the states and jurisdictions they serve. We are now facing the highest energy prices and the lowest reliability outcomes since PJM assumed control of our regional grid.
The economics here are simple: If PJM continues to fail to meet the demands for energy supply, prices will continue to rise.
I have said time and again: We cannot build a 21st century economy on an energy market that blocks new supply. I join governors and leaders across the region in demanding common-sense reform, including bringing more energy sources online. Marylanders deserve a grid that serves them at prices that families can afford.
Americans are paying record-high utility bills, and it’s not just inflation or extreme weather. A new @Harpers investigation by @npbowlin lays out how utilities, regulators, and Wall Street work together to lock in rising costs for customers. https://t.co/GC229USNha
A twisted logic defines the utility sector: utility companies make money, or customers save it. But not both. For @Harpers I wrote about how financial interests have taken over electric utilities — driving up power costs in the name of corporate profits

Hanukkah is a modest holiday.
But I value it
I tell my kids light offers hope amid discouragement
and illuminates possible paths when the way seems obscured
All the more important after a heartbreaking weekend
the lights offer the possibility of light in days ahead
