In our latest #ENCASE publication, POLIMI Graduate School of Management and LEAP s.c.a r.l. explored how different impurities can affect the density of CO2‑rich streams under conditions relevant to CO2 transport and storage.
By combining new experimental measurements with an evaluation of state‑of‑the‑art equations of state, the study provides insights into the impact of impurities and the accuracy of different models in predicting the density of CO2‑rich streams.

🌍 ENCASE brings CCS education to life at IFE!
As part of the The ENCASE project project, students from Akademiet Bislett Upper Secondary School visited the Institute for Energy Technology for an immersive learning day on climate change, CO₂ emissions, and carbon capture and storage (CCS).
Through a combination of presentations and the interactive Carbon Reduction Game, the students explored the real-world challenges of managing greenhouse gases: from technological solutions to economic and societal trade-offs.
The day concluded with a guided tour of IFE’s FALCON CO₂ loop, one of the ENCASE research infrastructures, where students saw how cutting-edge CCS research is conducted in the lab.
🎯 One of ENCASE’s key goals is to connect science with education, raising awareness about climate technologies and inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals.

How can we inspire more girls to explore science and technology? By turning curiosity into action, and showing how even everyday ingredients can reveal big scientific ideas!
Earlier this month, Lisa Smith from the Institute for Energy Technology, led a hands-on workshop at Girl Tech Fest in Lillestrøm, representing The ENCASE project. The 5th-grade girls explored the basics of carbon capture and storage (CCS) through simple experiments and engaging discussions.
Girl Tech Fest is a national initiative aimed at sparking early interest in STEM among young girls through hands-on activities and real-life role models. The workshop linked directly to ENCASE’s mission: helping society understand and engage with climate technologies.
We’re proud to support this kind of outreach, where science becomes tangible and fun!
Thank you to #GirlTechFest and all participants for a day full of curiosity, learning, and laughter! 💡🌍

🔵 Over the past few days, the #ENCASEproject Consortium Meeting took place in #Glasgow, #UK, kindly hosted by TÜV SÜD. 🤝
During the meeting, our partners presented the latest project developments and had the opportunity to visit the #TÜVSÜDNationalEngineeringLaboratory to explore the newly built Liquid and Supercritical #CO₂ Flow Facility.
💡 Another highlight came from Lucas STEPHANE, PhD (#IFE Institute for Energy Technology), who presented the #VR headset that makes possible the innovative use of AI-XR technologies in the ENCASE project.
This will enable users to train within hashtag#CCS infrastructures; AI-XR characters are opening new possibilities for immersive, human-centred training environments, potentially evolving into real “crew members” supporting both training and operational tasks. 🚀
💫 We’re looking forward to sharing all the results of this amazing project!

📣 Last week, our partners from TÜV SÜD presented a poster at the World CCUS Conference in #Bergen.
They discussed the construction, traceability and measurement uncertainty of the Research Infrastructure, which is being upgraded and developed at NEL through the #ENCASEProject.
This research infrastructure is vital for providing flow measurement traceability to the #CCUS industry and for developing a setting in which instrumentation such as composition analysers and sampling systems can be tested in flowing conditions.
The #WCCUSconference was a great opportunity for them to engage with industry stakeholders, hear about work being undertaken to develop other areas of carbon capture and storage, and also expand the reach of the ENCASE project.

ENCASE Project - TNO Research Facility - Colorado Flow Loop
let's have a look 👉 https://t.co/ol1AscMoS6
#ENCASE brings together Carbon Capture Storage research, operators, manufacturers, academia, and SMEs to increase competitiveness in the industry.
The Colorado Flow Loop is a cutting-edge outdoor test facility at TNO in Rijswijk, the Netherlands. It was specifically developed for the research on the flow of #co2 in processes or equipment related to the transport and injection of CO₂.
The facility can perform tests on pure CO2 or in combination with certain contaminants (CH4, CO, N2, H2, Ar). This facility stands out due to its high flexibility and low-cost design, allowing for a wide range of experimental setups.

The EU has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and becoming #carbonneutral by 2050. Deployment of Carbon Capture Storage (#CCS) from different industrial sectors across Europe is a powerful fast track approach to abate CO₂ emissions. CO₂ transport and injection are the essential links between capture sites and storage reservoirs.
Responding to this challenge, the goal of ENCASE is to contribute to a safer, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly CO₂ transport and well injection. ENCASE aims to continuously improve seven world-leading CCS-related research infrastructures (RIs) in the consortium, utilising state-of-the-art scientific instruments, tools, and methods to serve as the backbone for research and development of CCS technologies. Co-development of technologies will enhance the capability of RIs, increase RI personnel’s competence and enable these RIs to better address and close key knowledge gaps.

On 5–6 June 2025, the #ENCASE General Assembly Meeting took place at TNO in Rijswijk, the Netherlands.
The two-day gathering included a fascinating tour of the TNO #ColoradoFlowLoop, a state-of-the-art outdoor test facility designed to study the behaviour of CO₂ in transport and injection processes. The facility can conduct tests with pure CO₂ or mixed with CH4, CO, N2, H2, Ar, offering outstanding flexibility and configurations for a wide variety of experiments.
Consortium partners also had the chance to try the #CATO Carbon Reduction Game, an engaging and visual way to understand CO₂ policies. In this simulation, teams take on the role of energy and industrial companies, navigating emissions trading systems and government policies.
A big thank you to #TNO for hosting us and to all consortium partners for the highly interesting updates.
