The early history or race in pulmonary function has and continues to live on in medicine. The idea of innate difference in lung capacity between Black and white people has circulated widely. - @LundyBraun #EndRaceCorrection

Most of the scientific justification for this difference in lung function among races were flawed. Much of the scientific evidence failed to account for other important factors (e.g. age) that could influence lung capacity. - @LundyBraun

Dr Braun discusses the history of the interest in lung function and the spirometer. As Dr Braun notes, figures like pro-slave scientist Samuel Cartwright attempted to quantify a difference in lung capacity between Black and white people. - @LundyBraun #EndRaceCorrection
