For a decade, Azerbaijan has jailed its critics whilst Europe stayed silent ⚠️
We document what that silence costs and the pathway Europe must take to stop it.
➡️ The roadmap exists; what remains is the will to follow it: https://t.co/PITNlnwXVF
The political prisoners in Azerbaijan embody Europe's stated values and the principles the Council of Europe has been built on 🇪🇺
To them, silence is deafening.
If they stop believing in these institutions, European human rights bodies lose their best advocates and relevance.
Mayın 22-sində Bakı Ağır Cinayətlər Məhkəməsində hakimlər heç bir açıqlama vermədən zalı tərk etdilər. Növbəti məhkəmə tarixini də elan etmədilər. Bizim məhkəmələrəmiz süni şəkildə uzadılır. Bütün bunlar məhkəməmizi uzatmaq üçün edilir.
On 26 May 2026, Afgan Sadigov was denied exit from Baku airport: another travel ban, another silence from the authorities on why they restrict his freedom ⚠️🇦🇿
Georgia arrested a journalist on a fake charge at midnight, deported him to Azerbaijan, ignored a binding European Court order to protect him.

Political prisoner Ilgar Aliyev was found dead in Correctional Facility No. 13 on 1 May 2026 ⚠️
His death follows Elbayi Karimli's death in prison in December 2025. Prison deaths require independent investigation.
Seven years after Mammadli v Azerbaijan, the @echr.coe.int's judgment remains unimplemented 🇪🇺🇦🇿
The same indictment template now silences a new generation of journalists and human rights defenders and Anar Mammadli is in prison again.
We ask @coe.int for an ad hoc mechanism.
A human rights defender arrested in the "NGO case" tells the court:

Asef Ahmadov's powerful courtroom statement dismantles prosecutors' charges with facts. He seeks justice.
Time for a “grand deal” 🇺🇸🇦🇿
@andrew_danieri argues such a deal, built on the model the @WhiteHouse used in talks with Belarus, could provide for the release of a number of political prisoners vs the lifting of US arms sale restrictions.

Strengthening connectivity between the EU and the South Caucasus is in our shared strategic interest and we’re open to discuss a more structured partnership with Azerbaijan.
There is clear scope to deepen our cooperation on trade, transport and digital.
We also exchanged views on Russia’s war against Ukraine and the latest Iranian attacks in the Middle East.
In the latest injustice against Tofig Yagublu, the Supreme Court of #Azerbaijan rejected his appeal last week. #Tofig is an outspoken government critic, and long-time target of President Aliyev’s regime. His most recent arrest in Dec 2023 was another attempt to silence him.
The EU-Azerbaijan March 2026 joint statement contains no mention of political prisoners, civil society, media freedom, or the @EP_HumanRights own December 2025 resolution ⚠️
