🚨 NEJM 2025: Pediatric Imaging & Cancer Risk
A massive cohort (3.7M kids, US + Canada) shows 📈 radiation from medical imaging (esp. CT) increases risk of hematologic cancers.
🔹 RR 1.97 with 30–50 mGy
🔹 RR 3.59 with 50–100 mGy
🔹 ~10% of hematologic cancers may be attributable to imaging
But let’s pause.
✔️ Absolute risk remains tiny — only 25 excess cancers per 10,000 at ≥30 mGy.
✔️ Most cancers (1261/2961) occurred with zero imaging exposure.
✔️ Study is observational → risk of reverse causation & confounding by indication (e.g., scans done for early cancer symptoms or predisposing syndromes).
✔️ Estimates at higher doses are based on very few cases (31 in 30–50 mGy group).
🎯 Take-home:
Yes, even low-dose imaging carries measurable risk.
No, it’s not a reason to deny children needed scans.
The real message = cut low-value imaging, minimize dose, prefer MRI/US when possible.
The risk is real but very small.
⚖️ The balance between diagnostic benefit and radiation harm must guide practice.
