25 years ago on September 15th, 2001, Balbir Singh Sodhi was outside his business planting flowers in memory of the victims of 9/11, when Frank Roque shot him in the back 5 times after he assumed he was a Muslim man due to his skin color and turban.

Balbir’s murder was the first hate crime done in retaliation post-9/11. One that affected my family, and others, so deeply. Sikhs have continued to be persecuted ever since, along with our Muslim, Arab, South Asian and other Brown brothers and sisters.

Along with all the innocent lives lost that day in NYC, let us not forget those that passed in the aftermath. So many victims, all preventable. ❤️
