Over the week, I was opportuned to be part of the Core #IHR Team of the @NCDCgov in Coordinating the Nigeria's 2nd Joint External Evaluation and International Health Regulations Core Capacities #JEENigeria2023.
A major step forward for health research in Nigeria.
The commissioning of the ATBUTH Clinical Trial Centre marks a significant milestone in strengthening the country's clinical research capacity under the CEPI funded Lassa Program (the ARC-WA and ENABLE Bauchi Projects).
Through collaboration between the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), CEPI, and the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM, ATBUTH, the centre will support ethical, high-quality clinical trials, strengthen workforce capacity, foster scientific collaboration, and generate evidence to improve preparedness for future epidemics.
This investment reinforces the Federal Government's commitment to research, innovation, and resilient health systems that protect the health of Nigerians.

Following the successful training of all study staff, we are pleased to announce the commencement of participant enrollment for the ENABLE 1.5 Project, Bauchi (Bauchi ENABLE) in partnership with @CEPIvaccines.
This study will deepen our understanding of #LassaFever by assessing disease incidence, clinical presentation, and malaria co-infections across affected communities in the Northern region of the country where there have been increase cases of Lassa disease.
Bauchi ENABLE also marks a key step in strengthening Nigeria’s capacity for high-quality research and future vaccine trials.
Through collaboration, scientific excellence, and community engagement, the project is generating critical data to support Lassa fever vaccine development and improve response strategies across Nigeria and West Africa.

Last week I visited Shanghai, China and spoke at the International Forum for Co-Creating the Future of Global Health with China MedTech, hosted by @GHII_org and @DukeKunshan.
My talk was about, "From Innovation to Impact: Scaling Affordable Diagnostic Technology in Emerging Markets."
Here is what I shared. 🧵
ownership.
From previous research, it's evident that Community Engagement remains the greatest asset of the ENABLE study.
Excited for the Bauchi team as we expand this critical Lassa Fever research across West Africa.

Had the privilege of presenting at the expandrd ENABLE 1.5 Research Training Workshop at ATBUTH, Bauchi.
As Community Engagement Officer for the ENABLE Study in Nigeria, I shared “Nigeria ENABLE Community Engagement: Best Practices and Lessons Learnt” from our research work at...
ISTH, FMCO & AEFUTH.
Key message: Community Engagement is not a one-off event, it’s an ongoing process built on respect, genuine relationships, trust, community ownership, and sustainability.
Success in the ENABLE study comes from respecting communities and fostering true.....
🗓️We are excited to announce the commencement of the expanded ENABLE 1.5 Project in ATBUTH Bauchi.
Building on the success recorded across our initial three states, this next phase marks another important step in strengthening our understanding of Lassa fever incidence in Nigeria.
As part of this rollout, we are conducting an intensive training for field researchers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to ensure high-quality data collection, ethical research practices, laboratory management and effective community engagement.
In partnership with @CEPIvaccines and support from Mmarcro, @Epicentre, BNITM, @IVIHeadquarters , P95, MRC Gambia and @ATBUTHBauchi, we will explore critical gaps in Lassa fever epidemiology, including its incidence, clinical presentation, and co-infection with malaria.
We are moving closer to generating the scientific evidence needed to inform prevention strategies, improve case management, and ultimately save lives through the development of vaccines.

Yesterday marked another major milestone in the ENABLE Programme!
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention ENABLE Coordination Office has officially launched the ENABLE 1.5 Social Behavioral Study (SBS), a qualitative study designed to explore community attitudes, perceptions, and acceptance of a Lassa Fever vaccine, as well as willingness to participate in vaccine and therapeutics clinical trials.
This critical study, nested within the ENABLE Project, is being implemented in four study sites FMC Owo, AEFUTHA, ISTH and ATBUTH in collaboration with CEPIVaccines and IVIheadquarters.
Together, we are strengthening community engagement and advancing vaccine confidence to support effective public health interventions.
After five decades of outbreaks, the race for the world’s first Lassa fever vaccine is no longer distant. For Nigeria, this is a moment to lead.
In this #NHWPost, Shalom David & Uwaifiokun Okhuarobo examine how CEPI 3.0 could help accelerate Lassa vaccine development and why Nigeria has a critical role to play.

In collaboration with CEPIvaccines, the ENABLE study Coordination team at the NCDC have marked another Milestone in the The ENABLE 1.5 Project. Following serum samples accountability checks by the Compliance Partner across the three ENABLE study sites, over 7,800 samples including the final batch from AEFUTHA have now been successfully shipped to NRL Gaduwa for serological analysis.
This next phase of the study will bring us closer to generating the scientific evidence needed to strengthen vaccine development and response strategies against Lassa fever.
The fight against Lassa fever is a collective effort and progress like this is made possible through strong partnerships and shared commitment to public health.

As the ENABLE 1.5 Project gradually winds down, we are marking yet another important milestone.
Following accountability checks conducted by the Compliance Partner across the three ENABLE study sites, over 4,900 samples have been successfully shipped from ISTH and FMCO to NRL Gaduwa for serological analysis.
Each step brings us closer to generating the scientific evidence needed to strengthen vaccine development and response strategies.
The fight against Lassa fever is a collective effort — and progress is powered by partnership.

Today, @CEPIvaccines convened a briefing on its next five-year strategy, CEPI 3.0, backed by an additional $2.5 billion investment campaign to advance global epidemic and pandemic preparedness.
CEPI 3.0 builds on years of experience and places the 100 Days Mission at its core, aiming to accelerate vaccine development to emergency use within 100 days of a new threat. The strategy focuses on advancing R&D across high-risk pathogen families, strengthening diverse vaccine platforms, expanding regionally distributed manufacturing, and ensuring regulatory and policy readiness.
Ethiopia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Senegal were identified among priority countries for engagement, underscoring Africa’s growing role in vaccine R&D and outbreak response. Over the next five years, the measure of success will be whether regional manufacturing ambitions and regulatory readiness translate into sustained operational capacity for outbreak response.

#Lassa fever is a viral disease commonly spread through contaminated food, household items, or contact with infected individuals.
✅Prevention starts with you. Avoid physical contact with anyone showing symptoms.

In collaboration with @CEPIvaccines , We are glad to commence the 4th and last quarterly blood sampling of enrolled study participants for the Enable project at Federal medical Centre Owo (FMCO) and Irrua specialist teaching hospital (ISTH).
This also coincided with the CEPi and Partners Funders visit at the sites, to access the study progress and observe the last quarterly blood draw and follow up.
The future of vaccine development is a collaborative one 💪
