#UPDATE: Trump Nominates Devin Kennington as US Ambassador to Somalia

US President Donald Trump has nominated Devin Kennington to serve as the next United States ambassador to Somalia, a move that would restore a Senate-confirmed ambassador in Mogadishu for the first time since December 2025.

Kennington’s nomination is subject to approval by the US Senate before he can formally take up the post.

If confirmed, he would succeed Richard H. Riley, who left the position in December 2025 after the Trump administration recalled him to Washington. Since then, the US Embassy in Somalia has operated without a fully appointed ambassador.

Kennington was among a group of ambassadorial nominees announced by President Trump on Monday night.

The appointment comes as Washington continues to engage with Somalia on security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, humanitarian assistance and political developments. The United States remains a major international partner of Somalia, particularly in operations against the al-Shabaab militant group and efforts to strengthen government institutions.

Somaliland’s independence is not realistic in terms of ethnicity, religion sect and language. There is no difference between Somaliland and other parts of Somalia on above criteria. There is only one difference which is clan and federalism would perfectly suit. If every clan gets an independent state, Africa would have more than 500 states.

However, main problem with Somalia-Somaliland issue is Mogadishu. If Mogadishu solve political and security problems for other parts of Somalia, Somaliland would not have strong case for independence. So blaming Somaliland doesn’t help, let’s make Mogadishu works.
