Knowing how to drive should not be enough for someone to drive in Nigeria. They should also be taught to consider the likely consequences of driving recklessly for third parties and their dependants. They should also be punished severely for their recklessness.
Sometimes, they drive like they have another life or as if they are looking for death. It is unbelievable.
Some years back, I was in Nigeria on holiday. On my way back, my friend arranged a driver to take me to the airport. After driving for five minutes, I told him to stop and got out of the car. I called my friend who was in China on holiday to get me another driver.
I told him that if he keeps using that particular driver, he may not live long. I saw death all around the guy. I also warned the driver to be careful while driving.
My friend stopped using him, and eight months later, the driver died in a car accident. He was reckless.
There should be consequences for reckless driving and behaviour. I fear that those empowered to enforce the laws will end up taking bribes and letting these reckless drivers off the hook.
I am tired.
