Great to see so much support for the constructive ideas from @PenarthCouncil, from Penarth Business Group members and the public.
We support option 1 - 'Safe Space':
✅ Safe space
✅ More parking
✅ Saving jobs
The survey is here - deadline 30 July!

It's been very popular, alongside all the many benefits in terms of safety, jobs and the environment
"A clear 64% supported the measures either broadly or strongly with only 27% disagreeing.
A majority also said the impact on businesses was good."
@PenarthCouncil@VOGCouncil
@CeredigionCC are really going for it - promoting traffic-free safe zones & reaping the dividends 👏👏
Such uncertain times for local traders & shoppers in #Penarth.
We're counting on @VOGCouncil to take up the @PenarthCouncil plans to do the same here! https://t.co/2IlBsl3erU
Fantastic insights from Cardigan - huge NIMBY pushback that closing the high street would be catastrophic (with the usual hysterical vitriolic responses). Data since shows footfall is up, dwell time is up, spending is up.
📢 The new Castle Quarter Café opens on Friday!
Picturesque view ✅
Wide choice of restaurants (including lots of independents) ✅
240 outdoor, covered seats ✅
Open 7 days a week ✅
Track and Trace facility ✅
Hand sanitiser available ✅

@Barryvalefoe@DrewMabey@PenarthCouncil All suggestions well worth feeding into the survey. But rejecting these plans altogether = nothing will happen. We think that would be a huge missed opportunity
@Barryvalefoe@PenarthCouncil@cardiffcycling1@DrewMabey We'd agree that cycling & active travel are absolutely key to how we save our local high streets. Alas there's no plan on the table to support, on those ideal lines. But we also think these changes need to happen sensitively, in stages, with wide public understanding & buy-in...
Only a few more days left to give your views on what #Penarth town centre could look like - a safe space for people to shop & enjoy and support our amazing local businesses #shoplocal#ShopPenarth
@lisburnett@WPenarth@sarahrees500@as_penarth The 'Safe Space' option in the @PenarthCouncil survey actually increases parking. But car-free periods in the Windsor Rd area will make it much easier for shoppers on foot (the majority) to stick around & spend. Evidence suggests there'll be more of them!

Local traders tend to overestimate car use in their customers.
Research keeps finding this. Here's a Bristol study. https://t.co/VD2yEgmfcF
It turned out most shoppers arrived by foot.
Support safe space for Penarth pedestrians!

This is great news for towns in West Wales - da iawn @CarmsCouncil. Would it work in #Penarth@VOGCouncil? @PenarthCouncil want your views - have a look at their online survey https://t.co/CvAYAthyVc
King St in Carmarthen WILL be pedestrianised as part of plans to attract more shoppers into town during this period of social distancing.
It will be closed to all vehicles, including delivery vehicles, 10am - 4pm, 7 days a week, from Aug 3.

For more & more Penarth people pedestrianising our main street for part of each day makes sense.
Let's #buildbackbetter, and make #Penarth a better place to spend time and £ in

Covid has been tough on our high street. Our local shops and cafes need our support to bounce back. We'd like to see:
- Safe, accessible shops, with outdoor space for cafes & restaurants
- Pedestrian zones to increase footfall
- Increased town-centre parking

There certainly is a continental feel in Wellfield Road today! All tables and chairs have been moved into the suspended parking bays to ensure the footways are not obstructed and the last Birch Tree has just been planted. A lovely atmosphere.
