On la criait dans la rue, on la peignait sur les vitrines, on l'imprimait sur des cartes postales et jusque dans des jeux pour enfants. Pendant la Nuit de cristal, des Juifs arrêtés étaient embarqués dans un bus marqué « Voyage gratuit pour la Palestine », direction Dachau. En Pologne occupée, on rassemblait des familles juives sur la place du marché, forcées de poser avec une pancarte « Nous partons en Palestine », avant de les fusiller.

Les nazis chassaient les Juifs en leur disant d'aller en Palestine. Aujourd'hui qu'ils y sont retournés, on veut les en chasser en les traitant de nazis.

Il faut bien comprendre que la marque de l'antisémitisme, c'est le retournement perpétuel. Au XIXe siècle, les Juifs étaient à la fois trop capitalistes et trop révolutionnaires. Trop assimilés pour qu'on les repère, pas assez pour qu'on les accepte. Cosmopolites apatrides quand ils n'avaient pas d'État, nationalistes colonisateurs depuis qu'ils en ont un. Étrangers en Europe, étrangers au Proche-Orient. Hier, des Orientaux qu'il fallait renvoyer en Palestine, aujourd'hui, des Européens qu'il faudrait renvoyer en Pologne.

L'antisémitisme fonctionne comme un virus. Il ne change jamais de cible, il mute juste assez pour déjouer les anticorps de chaque époque. Et c'est pour cela que tant de gens ne le reconnaissent pas : ils cherchent la souche de 1938, alors que c'est un variant qui circule.

Jones is treating 1917 as year zero. It isn’t.

When the British promised a Jewish national home, Jews were already the largest community in Jerusalem and, by the later Ottoman counts, the majority.

The Prussian consul in 1844 put Jews ahead of Muslims and Christians in the city. By the 1880s they were the vast majority. Yet Herzl didn’t publish “The Jewish State” until 1896.

The people Jones says “actually lived there” didn’t include, in his telling, the Jews who already did.

His 90 percent figure is a countrywide snapshot of a thinly governed Ottoman district, not a title deed. And the promise wasn’t the whole map. In 1922 Britain cut the Mandate at the Jordan River. About three-quarters of the original territory, the part that became Transjordan, was closed to Jewish settlement and handed to an Arab emirate. The Jewish national home was what was left west of the river. That partition happened before a single refugee from 1948 existed.

Arabs did move into western Palestine in the Mandate years. British officials recorded illegal and unrecorded immigration from Syria, Egypt, and Transjordan into the towns the new economy was building. People moved toward jobs which the Jews created.

And none of this explains 1834. In Safed, Arab and Druze mobs looted the Jewish quarter for 33 days, killing and raping hundreds of Jews, while Egypt was fighting a peasant revolt. In Hebron the same summer, Jews who had taken no side were killed, synagogues wrecked, the quarter stripped. Herzl wasn’t even born.
There was no Zionist movement, no Balfour, no occupation to blame. The attacks still happened.

Jones isn’t describing the historical record. He is inventing a history that simply never existed, starting it at 1917, and omitting everything that came before it.
