Lapsed economist, recovering mathematician, & not very deeply learned computer scientist @ulaw. Mainly formal methods, graphs, stats/ML, global health, runs.
@StefanoErmon I have tested it and while the speed is really impressive, it still badly suffers from the unfortunate LLM tendency to say specific mathematical results have been proved (say, decades ago), providing non-existent DOIs and references to hallucinated papers and digging its heels.
@ZachWeiner Agree. Richard Feynman figured out that that computing has a physical base, and delivered a set of lectures about just that, the now classic Feynman Lectures on Computation. And that was 40 years ago.
@jamesrbuk To be fair, the original iPhone screen was too small, its enclosure clunky, its keyboard nonexistent and its battery didn't last long. Apart from that, I think it did fine & I'm using its 4yo Android great-grandchild. Design is not only what it looks like, it's how you use it.
Incredible run by Ethiopian Tigist Assefa, who has just pulverised the women's marathon record in Berlin.
The 29-year-old's 2:11:53 smashes Brigid Kosgei's old best of 2:14:04 from Chicago in 2019.
Assefa, who was 1:59 800m runner back in 2014, kisses Adidas shoes at the finish
I don't think many of my colleagues in adjacent (non-CS) fields recognize the threat that the "corporate control of computing and information" represents to academic freedom and the academy. If campus IT had their way we would all be using chromebooks and never have a root pw. /1
Many teachers haven’t considered it yet, but one powerful way to take advantage of ChatGPT is to raise your expectations of what students can accomplish in a given class thanks to this tool.
It is one of three ways I am incorporating AI into my classes. https://t.co/EsD3MPpyVT
Early reflections of the historical event @Illumina genomics forum. In this short thread, I highlight that it is not the technology & economics of scale that matter, but if we DO NOT use it to make a better, fairer and safer world, we will waste a lifetime opportunity. 1/x
Incidentally, even if you don't think there was any trade or financial disruption from Brexit (bold take, but you do you) it did absolutely paralyse British government at every level for at least 4 years... in fairly predictable ways.
#BMJInfographic A waste of lifesaving covid-19 vaccines
New graphic shows billions of doses of vaccines ordered by rich countries are due to expire https://t.co/40tB7gBdpl @will_s_t
De Millo et al. were right—proofs do require a social process to be accepted—but in Isabelle (and similar tools) this social process can be confined to the small logic core. https://t.co/sc5pzkyDRZ
@TaliaRinger@ShlomoArgamon The very idea that the power of intelligence stems from our vast diversity and not any single overarching principle is the raison d'être of The Society of Mind.
David MacKay passed away 5 years ago today. I did not know him particularly well, but our interactions left an outsized impression; I often wonder what he would think about a topic. In this spirit, I would like to take a moment to talk about conference travel. [1/]
@giorgiogilestro @LeoCipriano82 Si nota un repentino aumento dell'incidenza (più' test positivi) nelle tre fasce di eta' scolare nel dashboard del governo da 10 giorni dopo due mesi di riduzione pressoche' costante.
@jamesrbuk@lukemcgee To be fair, reeling from crisis to crisis is what the US institutions have been doing for the past 232 years, and yet they're still there
@giorgiogilestro They've been rather coy about it, despite almost 7 weeks of rollout. For proxy data, you can have a look at the rolling interactive heatmap of age demographics for cases by specimen date published for England, especially older age cohorts.
