Gilgamesh was supposedly buried beneath the Euphrates River.

The Sumerians left a pretty detailed account of how they did it.

Most people know the story of Gilgamesh searching for immortality. But nobody talks about what supposedly happened when he died.

There's an ancient Sumerian text called The Death of Gilgamesh, and it describes something I find pretty fascinating.

The people of Uruk were ordered to divert the Euphrates River.

The text actually records the command:"Unug, arise! Open up the Euphrates! Kulaba, arise! Divert the waters of the Euphrates!"

And they did.

Once the riverbed was exposed, workers constructed a massive stone burial chamber. Stone walls, stone doors, hard stone bolts and thresholds, and beams made of gold.

The builders then covered the structure with earth. The surviving account even contains a damaged passage indicating that the burial place was meant to remain hidden from anyone searching for it.

We're talking about an ancient civilization describing a major engineering operation to bury its king beneath one of the most important rivers in Mesopotamia.

Other accounts of the burial describe his wives, children and members of his royal household being buried alongside him.

I find the entire account remarkable because of how specific it is.

They described the physical construction of his tomb, the materials used, the diversion of a river and an attempt to conceal the burial chamber.

Now, nobody has conclusively identified the tomb of Gilgamesh. We don't know whether this burial actually happened.

But the Sumerians preserved the account thousands of years ago.

And if there is any historical truth behind it, somewhere beneath the ancient river channels around Uruk could be a burial chamber that was deliberately constructed never to be found.
