According to sources on the ground from within the Saint George/Piassa community in Addis Ababa there are plans to remove the statue of Menelik the II from its place in Piassa in front of Saint George Church. The removal is tentatively planned for the end of February to coincide with the opening of the Adwa museum on March 2, 2024 (on the western calendar). The area has already seen numerous cultural heritage sites and landmarks demolished in the name of “progress” but oddly the only sites destroyed where a part of the history of ETHIOPIA as it pertains to the monarchy of the past or the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. POINTED, WILLFUL DESTRUCTION OF SITES SIGNIFICANT IN AFRICAN, CHRISTIAN AND WORLD HISTORY in the name of “re-writing” history while erasing the true history of a nation in the process.
