The funniest part is that he could have easily just bit the bullet and lose nothing in the eyes of his audience. It’s just a hypothetical, he doesn’t actually have to date a trans woman. According to his own worldview and audience, trans women are just women so this question, to him, should be essentially the same as “would you date another woman if you were single?”

But of course he does not actually think trans women are women, he knows trans women are men. And the thought of being with one is so repulsive and embarrassing to him that he doesn’t even want it to be known that he would date one in a hypothetical scenario, that’s why he has to resort to “but I did eat breakfast”

At this point I’d have to ask what exactly “the patriarchy” is to you and how you use the term, because right now it seems like a catch-all explanation where anything that disproportionately disadvantages women is explained in terms of patriarchy, even when men aren’t directly involved or the incentives appear to be primarily economic rather than political.

Interesting. I’m inclined to agree somewhat. My disagreement is that I don’t think these insecurities require patriarchy as their primary explanation. Businesses will exploit whatever insecurities people already have, and I think women’s beauty standards are also substantially generated and reinforced through intrasexual competition and social policing by other women. Those dynamics would exist to some degree regardless of men’s private attitudes.

I also think it’s important to distinguish fatphobia from promoting healthy diets and fitness, since there are many legitimate, non-aesthetic reasons to encourage both.
