We stand with AFSCME in opposition to the current police contract. Indeed, the city cannot invest $218M more in one department while expecting the rest to operate with limited resources.
NEWS RELEASE: The backbone of Austin is its public workers—from sanitation to parks, to health. The proposed $218M police contract risks leaving these services underfunded. AFSCME 1624 demands fairness for ALL city workers.
Thank you to our attorney Mike Siegel at @groundgametx for his tireless efforts on behalf of the voters and those who have been harmed by unchecked police violence.
And thank you to YOU, the advocates who keep showing up to demand a better, safer city for all of us.
WE WON!
Today, Travis County Judge Cantú Hexsel declared the City of Austin is breaking the law in refusing to implement the Austin Police Oversight Act by maintaining the discretionary "g file" which keeps records of police misconduct secret.
We hope the sunlight offered through the full, forthcoming implementation of the Austin Police Oversight Act will bring about the meaningful deterrent to police misconduct and brutality our city voted for back in 2023.
Judge ruled on the APOA: @EquityActionATX won, the city lost. Austin no longer has a "g file" protecting information about police misconduct from the public. I've been waiting for this day for my entire adult life.
We hold on to hope for an Austin where students are free to speak out against violence without being subject to violence, just as we hope and call for a free Palestine. 5/5
Further, given the choice between helping reduce harm during a very real public health emergency today or causing harm to students exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to free speech, they chose violence. 4/5 https://t.co/SvJ2ySvJCi
.@ATCEMS says it has responded to a surge of overdose incidents throughout the day, affecting more than 30 people with 4 deaths suspected to be related. ATCEMS leadership said they usually only get 2-3 overdose calls per day.
But we don’t have that system because the City of Austin continues to fight implementation of the ballot measure voters overwhelmingly approved 1 year ago which was meant to create it. It's time the City stops fighting & gives the people the oversight system they voted for. 3/5

We call on CA Delia Garza and DA Josè Garza to drop all charges against protesters.
This moment is a harrowing reminder that each of these students deserves a robust complaint system if they face false charges or experienced excessive force. 2/5
