☸ ETHIOPIA & ACCESS TO THE SEA

According to this declassified CIA document, #Djibouti (formerly known as French Somaliland) served as Ethiopia’s primary outlet to the sea.

The document also notes that Emperor Haile Selassie once declared Djibouti an integral part of Ethiopia.

However, he ultimately lost control of Djibouti due to the influence of a militarily "powerful" Somalia.

Ethiopia gained direct access to the sea for the first time in its history when it forcibly annexed #Eritrea in 1952, but that privilege ended when Eritrea gained independence in 1991.

#BREAKING - 💥Ethiopian Opposition Rejects Election, Citing Violence and Irregularities

(By @africa_dne) ― The Coalition for Ethiopian Unity (CEU), an opposition alliance that participated in Ethiopia’s general election, has rejected the credibility of the vote, arguing that widespread insecurity, violence, and alleged electoral irregularities rendered the process incapable of reflecting the will of the Ethiopian people.

In a statement [find it in the comment section] issued on Wednesday, the coalition described the election as a “rigged” process conducted under conditions of fear and coercion, warning that it would not contribute to peace or political stability in the country.

The group said Ethiopia’s deepening political crisis cannot be resolved through military force or elections designed to consolidate power, reiterating its call for an inclusive national dialogue involving both armed and unarmed opposition groups.

According to the coalition, the election took place amid a deteriorating security environment marked by deadly attacks, kidnappings, and mass displacement.

CEU cited reports that 49 Christians were killed and more than 280 people abducted in the Arsi area of Oromia Region during the election period, while thousands of residents were forced to flee their homes. The coalition also referred to the reported abduction of passengers travelling on buses bound for Addis Ababa.

“These are not the conditions under which citizens can freely express their political will,” the statement said.

The opposition alliance said it entered the election despite concerns about the political environment in order to demonstrate what it described as the government’s willingness to dominate the political process. It argued that events before, during, and after polling day confirmed longstanding concerns about the integrity of the vote.

CEU criticized official assessments that declared most parts of the country suitable for elections and rejected what it described as a return to overwhelming one-party dominance. The coalition claimed the process represented a significant setback for democratic development and risked further exacerbating political tensions.

The alliance also announced that it would not recognize any individual claiming victory under its banner, arguing that participation under conditions of violence and intimidation could not confer political legitimacy.

The statement urged opposition parties to avoid legitimizing the process by joining parliament and called on domestic and international actors to exercise caution before endorsing the election outcome.

At the same time, CEU acknowledged the efforts of some election officials and civil society actors who attempted to carry out their responsibilities despite what it described as significant political pressure.

The coalition further appealed to the international community, diplomatic missions, and foreign media organizations to continue monitoring developments in Ethiopia and to support efforts aimed at achieving a negotiated political settlement.

The statement comes as Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party is widely expected to secure another parliamentary majority, while opposition groups continue to raise concerns over political freedoms, security conditions, and the inclusiveness of the electoral process.

Ethiopia Election Board Admits Irregularities and Voter Fraud

ETHIOPIA ― ⚡️Questions are mounting over the integrity of #Ethiopia's election after the country's electoral board acknowledged cases of voter fraud and procedural violations at several polling stations.

National Election Board (NEBE) Chairperson Melatwork Hailu said officials shut down some polling stations after poll workers were caught marking ballots and placing them into ballot boxes.

The vote was further marred by accusations of multiple voting, fraudulent voter registrations, and widespread disruptions. In some cases, ballot boxes were allegedly being filled before polls had even opened.

According to NEBE, more than 143 polling stations were closed in the Amhara and Oromia regions because of security concerns, while voting did not take place in Tigray.
