AMERICAN ETHIOPIAN PUBLIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE (AEPAC)
STATEMENT ON THE ESCALATING VIOLENCE AND HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN MOYALE, SOUTHERN ETHIOPIA
The American Ethiopian Public Affairs Committee (AEPAC) expresses grave concern over the escalating armed clashes in Moyale, following a territorial and administrative dispute in Ethiopia’s Somali regional states.
Reports indicate that the violence, which erupted on October 22, has resulted in deaths and injuries, the burning of homes and businesses, and the displacement of civilians. While initial reports documented thousands fleeing into neighboring Kenya, subsequent estimates by displaced people suggest that as many as 10,000 people, predominantly women and children, may have crossed the border . This figure remains unverified, and the full scale of casualties and destruction is still unclear.
AEPAC condemns the violence and is deeply concerned by the Ethiopian government’s continued failure to prevent renewed clashes and adequately protect civilians. The immediate priority must be to stop the fighting, safeguard civilian lives, and prevent further displacement.
We urge the Ethiopian government and all parties involved to immediately cease hostilities, facilitate humanitarian access, and pursue a peaceful resolution to the underlying territorial and administrative disputes. We also call for an impartial investigation into reported deaths, injuries, and the destruction of homes and businesses.
We appeal to the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia, the U.S. government, the African Union, the United Nations, and the international community not to remain silent or allow this crisis to be overlooked The reported attacks on civilians and the growing humanitarian emergency demand urgent diplomatic engagement, sustained international attention, and concrete action to prevent further sufferings.
We commend the Kenya Red Cross Society for mobilizing emergency assistance and urge international humanitarian partners to help provide displaced families with shelter, food, safe drinking water, medical care, and other essential supplies.
The people of Ethiopia deserve peace, security, and dignity. Civilians must not continue to pay the price of unresolved disputes. The international community must act urgently to protect lives, address the humanitarian crisis, and support a peaceful and lasting resolution. Silence is not an option.

On the one hand in Arsi, and on the other hand in Moyale, numerous Ethiopians have been harmed and continue to suffer from ongoing killings, displacement, and the destruction of property.
While it is not new, it remains astonishing that the government and state media continue to sideline the magnitude of the crisis by focusing on fun and festive programming, even as recently as this evening, rather than delivering meaningful content to the public.
Kenyan and international media outlets are reporting on the tens of thousands of Ethiopians who fled Moyale into Kenya. Meanwhile, even if international media has grown tired and grown silent regarding the more than 36 Orthodox Christian believers found killed in a single location, the public continues to discuss it across social media.
Only a single government official has appeared, attempting to downplay the government's primary responsibility by blaming the atrocities on "Tsimdo" or other excuses, an approach that destroys public trust. The government bears the fundamental duty to protect the safety of its citizens.
What the public needs is not excuses or deflection, but swift, transparent action that saves lives, assists the displaced, and brings perpetrators to justice.
How long will the downplaying of citizens' suffering continue?
ETHIOPIA — ⚡️ At least 47 victims were laid to rest in a mass burial following attacks across the Birbo, Chole, and Sole Guna zones of Shirka Woreda, in the Oromia Region.
This was not an isolated incident, but part of a disturbing pattern of targeted attacks against the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and its followers.
These attacks reflect a broader pattern of violence in which Orthodox Christians have been targeted, often amid the dangerous conflation of Orthodox Christian identity with Amhara ethnicity by ethnic Oromo attackers.
Such acts of violence against innocent civilians and their religious institutions must be condemned, and those responsible must be held accountable.

A few years ago, Abiy Ahmed’s Horn of Africa adviser, @reda_getachew, acknowledged that 🇪🇹 had never been a coastal state in its own right. I hope he won’t abandon that historical reality when political ambitions come into play.
The Oromo elites expansionist projects were met with a fiercest resistance from the Somali Regional force and militias, but the shameless Oromo elites are blaming TPLF.
A public seminar is taking place now in London, UK. It is led by Mr Salih Abdella, Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the State of Eritrea to the UK, who is briefing attendees on current affairs. The atmosphere reflects the resilience of Eritreans in the diaspora worldwide and their support for the Government and Eritrean defence forces. Eritreans worldwide are showing their support and condemning the aggression of the Ethiopian Government, led by Col. Abiy Ahmed. #EmbassyMedia
LONDON — Over £275,000 was raised today at the London Mekhete seminars as a powerful expression of gratitude and unwavering support for the defence of the homeland.
Remarkably, this extraordinary show of solidarity came even before the official fundraising campaign had begun, demonstrating the Eritrean diaspora’s deep-rooted commitment to the sovereignty, dignity, and security of their nation.
When Eritrea calls, its sons and daughters across the world stand ready. From every corner of the globe, the spirit of "Mekhete" lives on, united by one people, one nation, and an unwavering commitment to Eritrea’s sovereignty, dignity, and pride!
Most recently, the Eritrean diaspora rallied behind its beauty queen, Snit Habteab Tewoldemedhin for Miss World competition, helping her break a World Record.
This remarkable achievement once again showcased the extraordinary power of Eritrean unity, determination, and collective action.
Whether standing behind the nation, supporting its representatives on the world stage, or rallying for a common cause, the Eritrean diaspora continues to demonstrate an unbreakable bond with the homeland.

With most U.S. unilateral sanctions against the Eritrean Defence Forces (EDF) now lifted, the Eritrean diaspora may soon resume direct fundraising campaigns to support the nation's defence.
The North American "Mekhete" has already demonstrated the diaspora's extraordinary mobilization capacity, by raising over a million dollars in less than an hour in the past.
Such a remarkable show of solidarity could soon be repeated as Eritreans worldwide rally behind their nation and its defence forces.
ERITREA — The Eritrean diaspora worldwide, widely recognized as the 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙝 𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙩 (4G), has launched a series of "Mekhete" seminars to demonstrate solidarity with their government and the Eritrean Defence Forces amid growing tensions and the looming threat from Ethiopia.
Prof. Peter Kagwanja Kenyan politician warned about five years ago that Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed would turn the Horn of Africa into the most unstable region on the continent.
Kenyan MP Farah Maalim has now strongly highlighted the same concern.
