NBC spends exactly 249 words on this sob story before finally admitting that these teenagers' parents were deported after the mom was arrested for theft. It takes them 400 before they admit that the parents voluntarily left their kids in America.

But more to the point, stories like this always rely on a core of gross emotional manipulation. Plenty of American kids are separated from their parents because their parents are in prison. One of the reasons to avoid crime is that getting caught means hurting all the people around you. NBC's premise is that foreigners who broke into the country should get special treatment for their crimes that native-born Americans don't get.
