A diatonic scale is defined by having 7 notes with a specific pattern of 5 whole steps & 2 half steps. Each of the 7 modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian) simply starts on a different degree of a major scale.
