@PAHoyeck Whatever you do, DO NOT make a joke about singing stars from a certain East Asian peninsula (southern half). There are enough gossip posts on that subject to dominate your timeline for eternity.
@Aesthetic_City@modacitylife Once in Japan I bought some 2x4s, and since I was on my bicycle I asked to have them delivered. Got home and 5 minutes later this elderly guy on his bicycle showed up with my lumber.
@Elefire_the_elf@capsulebutt I have stumbled into a minefield of unfamiliar semiotics and I will now make a hasty exit and leave it all to the experts....
@capsulebutt Ah, I see what you mean! Maybe it would be better for me to say "they are imitating their fantasy of wealthy 19th-century 10-year-olds who are in danger of being abducted by Baudelaire in the Luxembourg Gardens"...?
@JMGreerWriter There was a famous ceramicist in Japan, whose work was frequently copied by fakers using the local clay. He said he was glad about it, because in the future all his bad pots would be attributed to the fakers, while all their good pots would be attributed to him.
@capsulebutt The very attractive young Chinese lady who worked at my mom-in-law's day service used to tease me about how pale my legs are. It was the most flirtatious fun I've had in years.
@politicalawake Misleading to say it was 1200 yrs old. The temple was established at that time, but it had already burned in 2005 - the one that burned yesterday is a modern reconstruction. Given its age & the fact that it holds an eternal flame, it has probably burned many times before.
@Logo_Daedalus In 1965 I was 6 and my brother was 9. Every Saturday morning Mighty Mouse was on at the same time as Fireball XL5, which meant serious conflict in my house. We couldnβt even imagine having two TVs, much less on-demand streaming.
@xgabegottliebx David Bentley Hart's All Things Are Full of Gods is written in an eccentric way, but is well worth reading. It summarizes most of the current theories in a clear way. Maybe it's too long to be part of a semester's list.
@Uzonna7 In his memoirs, Cecil Beaton describes how he invented the look of the film. Stylized, idealized. He did so many things, his memoirs are a great pleasure to read.
@OrthodoxTao I think the difference is mostly just time. After the US occupation of Japan several men who loved the culture introduced us to the literature, films, etc. So Japan has seemed more available. China has only "opened" relatively recently, but will soon be "discovered" by the West.
@dionysiuscircle Thanks for the link! I've never been to the Rijksmuseum and it looks wonderful. I really like the Barbizon School, and feel like there are several artists in it that deserve to be better known. They tend to get overshadowed by the Impressionists, who learned so much from them.
@StartsWithABang But how do you remember the order if you can't sing "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizza Pies"? "... Just Served Us Noodles" doesn't fit the tune.
